"The Winter King" - Quiz II

Second of a series of quizzes on Cornwell's amazing trilogy on Arthur. All questions here are on Book One: 'The Winter King'. Cornwell's take on the myth is slightly different from the medieval Arthurian romances, so it pays to have read the book. Enjoy.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Uther, the High King of Britain, realizes that his end is near and that his successor Mordred's life is in danger, he appoints four guardians for Mordred. They were to raise him and protect the kingdom till he becomes of age. Who among the following people was NOT a guardian of Mordred?

Answer: Morgan, the priestess

Uther initially has plans only for three guardians, but Morgan, eager to have her brother's exile lifted, suggests Arthur. When some of the other Kings of the Council support Morgan, Uther has no choice but to agree.
2. At the beginning of 'The Winter King' Merlin, Lord of Avalon and the most feared and respected druid in all of Britain, has not been spied in the Kingdom for over five years. What does Nimue, his priestess, claim the reason for this absence is?

Answer: He was on a quest to seek the Knowledge of Britain

Nimue goes on to explain that the Knowledge of Britain involves the Thirteen Treasures which, when gathered, will help to bring back the old Gods who would help them defeat the Saxons.
3. After defeating the scant Silurian army outside Caer Cadarn, Arthur thanks a fifteen year old Derfel for risking his life to protect the Edling Mordred and promises him a reward. What is Derfel's reply?

Answer: That he wanted to become a warrior

Pleased with the reply, Arthur hands Derfel over to Owain, the Dumnonian champion, to teach him the soldier's trade.
4. At the feast after Arthur's victory over Gundleus, Derfel was quick to notice a tall black-haired woman dressed in finery, serving Arthur. He took her to be a princess, but was quickly informed that she was Arthur's slave, given to him by the King of Broceliande. Who was this woman?

Answer: Ailleann

As Derfel sits entranced by Ailleann, Morfans tells him that she was a slave gifted to Arthur by his brother-in-law. Morfans then goes on to predict (correctly) that it will not be long before Arthur sends her away to 'marry well'.
5. Owain, the Dumnonian champion, and Cadwy of Isca plan to plunder the settlement of the tin miners from Kernow. Who were they going to disguise themselves as in order to blame the attack on?

Answer: The Irish Blackshields

Owain and his men paint their shields with pitch to resemble those of the Irish Blackshields. Cadwy and his tribe could not take part in the raid because of the easily recognizable blue tattoos on their faces.
6. When Arthur first spots Guinevere in the halls of King Gorfyddyd, she is a landless princess who has taken refuge in Powys. Which ruthless Irish Lord had captured Guinevere's native kingdom of Henis Wyren and driven out the royal family?

Answer: Diwrnach

The Irish Lord Diwrnach and his Bloodshield warriors were so infamous for their acts of cruelty that men preferred fighting the Saxons to taking them on.
7. Lancelot, Prince of Benoic, has a half-brother who is a pious Christian, a scholar and a fearless warrior. This man goes on to become one of Derfel's closest friends and Arthur's trusted men. Name him.

Answer: Galahad

Galahad, fearless and ever-dependent is the polar opposite of Lancelot who is vain and selfish. Galahad is also one of the few Christians who shows tolerance towards the pagans of Britain.
8. When Derfel first meets the old Father Celwin in King Ban's library, what is the venerable priest said to be conducting a research on?

Answer: The wingspan of Angels

Father Celwin, an irritable man with a fancy for cats, is actually the druid Merlin in disguise. He is on his quest to find the Treasures of Britain and bring the old Gods back.
9. During the two years Derfel and his small band of war-hardened men fight the Franks in Benoic, they adopt their symbol from an insult thrown at them by the disheartened enemy. What is this symbol?

Answer: The wolf tail

Dervel and his small army (who would later be called the Wolftails) fight the Franks in the dense woods of Benoic. They stalk the enemy for days, howling to inform them of their presence, and attacking them when least expected.
10. While Ynys Trebes is burning and the Franks pillaging, Derfel rushes to rescue Merlin. But the great Druid refuses to leave until he had found what ancient artefact?

Answer: The Scroll of Caleddin

According to Merlin, the Scroll of Caleddin contains lost knowledge on how to summon the Gods of Britain using the Thirteen Treasures. The other options - The Sword of Rhydderch, The Ring of Eluned, The Cauldron of Clyddno Eiddyn - are among the Treasures with the sword being the one known popularly as the Excalibur.
