The beginning of the story is really what happens in the end. Janie was coming back to Eatonville, a town she ran away from with her third husband Tea Cake. Eatonville was an all black town; she and her late husband, Joe Starks, helped establish it. As she walked in, she faced the scorn of the neighbors she once lived with. Everyone talked about her running away with a younger man who they thought stole all her money.

Janie grabbed onto a cow's tail, and a dog that was perched on top of the creature was rabid and tried to attack her. Tea Cake killed the dog, saving Janie.
