1. Why had Ayla left the Clan, at the beginning of the book?

Answer: She had been cursed with death

She was dead to the Clan - her only choice was to try and find the others.

2. How are Jondalar and Thonolan related?

Answer: They are brothers

They are classed as brothers as they were born to the same woman (Marthona) although they have different fathers.

3. What animals did Ayla discover had been previous inhabitants of the cave?

Answer: Cave Lions

The cave lion is Ayla's Totem. Although there was evidence the cave had been used by cave lions, it was very old and had obviously been abandoned for a long time.

4. Who are the first people mentioned that Thonolan and Jondalar stay with, in this book?

Answer: Losadunai

Although the first people they stay with on their journey are the Lanzadonii, the stay is not documented in the book. We are first introduced to the brothers after they cross the Glacier and meet the Losadunai hunting party.

Ayla had killed Whinney's dam and when the hyenas tried to kill her she got very angry and chased them away with her sling. She then realised she would have to take responsibility for the young animal.

Answer: Thonolan had been gored by a woolly rhinoceros

When Thonolan went to get some wood for the raft, Jondalar heard the commotion and discovered that the Rhino had followed them and attacked Thonolan. He was very worried and unsure of what to do, when the Sharamudoi came along.

Thonolan told Jondalar that their mother knew he wasn't going home, but would be very upset if Jondalar didn't. He also made him promise to take her something special, as Willomar always did when he came back from the trading missions.

When Jondalar saw Ayla make the fire with the firestones, he got very excited and drew her attention to the fire; he was repeating the same word over again which she then tried to copy, leading to her first lesson in words.

Ayla went out on Whinney to search for the prey and Jondalar stayed to finish the new weapons. Ayla was overwhelmed when Jondalar gave her the spear thrower with the Bison carved on it because he was giving her more luck than himself.

Answer: They were smiling at her

Ayla and Jondalar had been travelling for fun for a few days and had just decided to go back to the cave when the Mamutoi hunters found them. Because their clothes were the same, they assumed they were Mamutoi and called out a greeting, but Ayla was shocked by the instant acceptance of the smile, which has a very special meaning to her.
