Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In book one, "The Remains of the Dead", we found out that Sadie Novak lost which member of her family to suicide?

Answer: Brother

Sadie's brother Brian had taken his own life five years earlier. Sadie became a crime scene cleaner after she'd cleaned up his death site inside his home. She cleaned up scenes in and around Seattle, Washington. In book one, Sadie's sister Dawn became briefly engaged to a man named Noel, whom Sadie felt looked too much like Brian.
2. "The Remains of the Dead"- What was the name of Sadie's cleaning company?

Answer: Scene-2-Clean

In book one, Sadie ran the company with her employee Zack Bowman. Zack was a former policeman who'd been hurt on the job. The injury resulted in an addiction to pain killers, which led to an inappropriate incident at work. He'd been fired from the Seattle Police Department and hired by Sadie a couple of years later. Sadie hired another employee in book one, but she did not begin working until the book had concluded.
3. "The Remains of the Dead"- Who was the real killer of Trudy Toth?

Answer: Kristian Lasko

Initially, the deaths were ruled a murder-suicide. It was believed that Grant Toth had murdered Trudy, and then killed himself. Sadie, with her ability to see dead people who hadn't yet crossed over, encountered Kent Lasko inside the Toth home during her initial inspection.

She thought he was a dearly departed Grant Toth, until it occurred to her that she could never see suicides in the past. She came to realize the man was not dead at all, but had come into the home to cover Trudy's affair with his brother Kristian. Kristian had killed Trudy. And, when Grant found her body, he'd killed himself. Kristian tried to shoot Sadie, but hit her new psychic pal Maeva Morrison instead.

He was caught in the end, with the help of Maeva and Grant Toth's ghost.
4. "The Remains of the Dead"- At the end of the book, there was a sad twist when it was revealed that Sadie's best friend Pam was dead. What had been Pam's cause of death?

Answer: Cancer

During the read, Pam was described as "popping" up in certain locations, which was an indication she might not be alive. No one, except for Sadie, ever talked to Pam. Sadie was able to finally release her grief over Brian's death, and that also allowed her to help Pam. Zack drove Sadie and Pam to her grave site, and Sadie told Pam that it was time for her to go. She apologized to Pam for holding on to her for the two years since her death of ovarian cancer, and now it was okay for Pam to cross over.
Sadie: "It's time."
Pam: "I don't even know how..."
Sadie: "Let go. Let go of your life. Let go of me."
5. "Devil May Ride"- Sadie found out that she had a niece. What was her name?

Answer: Rhea

Rhea had been born after the death of Sadie's brother. Rhea herself had been murdered by her step-father before Sadie had ever known of her existence. Rhea helped Sadie solve a crime before she crossed over with her father. It was closure, to some degree, for Sadie to realize why her brother had committed suicide.
6. "Devil May Ride"- Sadie encountered her first ghost dog at the start of this book. What kind of dog was it?

Answer: Rottweiler, who was a watch dog

Sadie met the dog while she was helping out another crime scene clean company. She was there to clean up a former meth lab, not her normal clean scene, and the dog was there to guard the property. He did not realize he was dead, and tried to attack Sadie several times.

While there, Sadie also found a newborn baby in the midst of an interrupted Satanic ritual, and she met the baby's determined dead mother. The woman had sacrificed herself for the ritual and was happy about it. When she passed through Sadie, instead of the usual skin crawling experience, Sadie felt like she was on fire.
7. "Devil May Ride"- Was Sadie able to talk her Aunt Lynn into moving to Seattle to be closer to her, her sister and her parents?

Answer: Yes

Sadie's uncle died right before her brother's suicide five years earlier, and her aunt had been living in that big old house all alone for all the years since. When she went back to her aunt's home, her uncle explained that Brian had visited him right before his death. Sadie's uncle had been institutionalized because he too had the ghostly visions, though he had come across as schizophrenic. Upon his death, Sadie's brother Brian had inherited them.

It was Rhea's mom, Joy, who had convinced Brian his life was doomed with the visions.

He had committed suicide shortly afterward. Sadie inherited the ability after Brian died. Her uncle told Sadie to convince his wife Lynn, her aunt, to sell their home and move to Seattle to be near the family she had left. So, Sadie went back and was able, with the support of her family, to convince Aunt Lynn to move to Seattle.
8. "Dead and Kicking"- At the start of the novel, Sadie was attending the funeral of which loved one?

Answer: Father

Sadie's father died from a heart attack while he was watching Jay Leno. After the services, he appeared to her while she was in the bathroom. And, it took some convincing on her part that he was dead. He did not believe her. But, when he looked into the mirror and saw no reflection, he was no longer able to deny the truth.
9. "Dead and Kicking"- Sadie's partner and boyfriend, Zack Bowman, was injured in this book. Which part of his body was hurt in a fall inside a haunted house?

Answer: Ankle

It was inside the home of Mimi Wicks. Zack had dated her daughter Paula prior to working for Sadie. Paula asked Zack for help cleaning out the house, as it was an intense hoarding situation. Paula also had other plans for Zack, like stealing him away from Sadie. So, when an angry male spirit named Stephen Brant caused Zack to be injured, Paula (a nurse) took it upon herself to give him narcotics for pain. Zack had been a recovering addict when Sadie hired him and when they became a couple.

His relapse was not all Paula's fault. Sadie found evidence inside the home they shared that Zack had been back on pain pills even before his accident.

He entered rehab again near the end of the novel.
10. "Dead and Kicking"- Was Sadie's father able to save her from Bertrude Brant?

Answer: Yes

Despite his being a ghost, Ron Novak learned how to manipulate objects. He was able to pick up his revolver and shoot Bertrude. She'd been the one setting the fires to Sadie's property, and arrived at her parents' home with the Molotov cocktails to finish Sadie off. Ron had the chance to tell Sadie that she was the reason he'd stayed behind.

He was there to save her life, to let her know that her gift was her purpose and that she'd one day meet others like herself. Afterward, Ron shimmered across to the other side.
