Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When beginning his story to Chronicler, Kvothe lists several of his major adventures. Which of the following is an adventure he has in this book?

Answer: burned down the town of Trebon

While Kvothe is "credited" with burning down the town of Trebon, we learn the truth of the story: a drug-crazed draccus was drawn to the harvest festival bonfires. Granted, Kvothe was the one who was trying to kill the draccus with an overdose of denner resin, so technically he may be responsible after all.
2. Upon being formally introduced to Chronicler, Kvothe recognizes him as the author of what book?

Answer: The Mating Habits of the Common Draccus

"The Mating Habits of the Common Draccus" is mentioned a few times in the story. It's one of the first books Kvothe reads when he gets to University, and he borrows an updated version with engravings later on.

"Rhetoric and Logic" is the book gifted to him by his first teacher, which serves as a letter of introduction to University.
3. Staying in the woods after his family is killed, Kvothe spends his days playing his lute until the strings break. How many strings break before he is forced to travel to a city to replace them?

Answer: 3

Kvothe plays a seven-stringed lute. He teaches himself to play with only six strings, then only five, but three broken strings are too much. This talent becomes important later in the book, when a rival breaks one of his strings during a performance and Kvothe is able to continue and finish playing.
4. How many times is Kvothe's lute broken to pieces in the book?

Answer: twice

Kvothe's lute is first broken by Pike during a fight on Kvothe's first day in Tarbean. He eventually gets a replacement lute, but that is broken by Ambrose, which causes Kvothe to call the name of the wind without exactly knowing how to do so.
5. What is Kvothe's tuition costs for his first term at University?

Answer: less three talents

After pleading with the masters that he only had two jots to his name and to give him three talents to afford room and board while he studied, the masters grant his request. Kvothe initially misunderstands, but Master Lorren explained as he accompanied Kvothe to explain the unusual "fee" to the bursar.

The other answers are the tuitions given to Kvothe's friends that term: Willem was seven and eight, Simmon was five, and Manet was one and six.
6. When Kvothe is punished by whipping, what drug does he take to dull the pain and reduce the bleeding?

Answer: nahlrout

By taking the nahlrout Kvothe is able to take his lashes without crying out or without much blood, which is probably how he got the nickname "Kvothe the Bloodless".

Kvothe is whipped twice in the book: three lashes for his "reckless use of sympathy" against Master Hemme and, later, six lashes for malfeasance against Ambrose.
7. Why is Kvothe banned from the Archives?

Answer: he used a lit candle to see

Ambrose tricks Kvothe into using a candle in the Archives, which is forbidden since it is filled with old books. Master Lorren bans Kvothe and the event sours their relationship. Eventually Kvothe finds a way to bypass the ban and sneak in through the underground passages.
8. In a dramatic rescue, Kvothe saves Fela in the Fishery. Why did she need to be rescued?

Answer: the bone-tar spilled

The "bone-tar", Regium Ignaul Nerat, is heavier than air, corrosive and extremely volatile. When the entire canister spilled, Fela was trapped.

The "Fishery" is slang for "Artificery" and has nothing to do with fish; most of the buildings in University are known by their nicknames.

Fela is very grateful to Kvothe for saving her life, buying him a replacement cloak and helping in his illicit trips to the Archives.
9. How does Kvothe kill the draccus?

Answer: magnetism

Kvothe uses sympathy, a lodenstone, and a scale from the draccus to magenetize the creature, which causes the large iron wheel from the Tehlin church to strike and kill the creature. Kvothe initially tries to poison the creature with denner resin, but the wheel is what finally killed the draccus.

Unfortunately while Kvothe is recovering, the villagers burn and bury the "demon" that was killed, before Kvothe could salvage anything for trade or study.
10. When the possessed mercenary comes into the inn, how does Chronicler recognize him?

Answer: his shirt

The mercenary is wearing the blue shirt that he stole from Chronicler in the beginning of the book. It was a deep, royal blue that Chronicler had bought in Linwood and hadn't even worn yet.

Bast believes that the mercenary was actually one of the Mahael-uret, a skin dancer, though he adds that it may be something else since it behaved a bit differently. But, as Bast says, "All snakes bite, Reshi. I don't need their names to know they're dangerous. I recognized it as being from the Mael. That was enough."
