Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Did you see the way he just went SAILING right out there?"

Answer: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

"It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1963) is an all-star madcap comedy. The movie begins when Jimmy Durante, recently released from prison, speeds toward southern California to uncover $350,000 that he buried under a "big W." When his car crashes over a cliff, several motorists stop to check on the old man, and he tells them about the stolen loot buried under a "big W." After he dies, the fun begins as each person in the motley crew races to find the cash first!

Milton Berle delivers this quote at the beginning of the film when he sees Jimmy Durante's car fly over the cliff.
2. "Oh there's nothing wrong with the children, only the governesses."

Answer: The Sound of Music

"The Sound of Music" (1965), starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, is one of the most beloved musicals in film history. Maria, a postulant nun reconsidering her future life at the convent, takes a position caring for a retired naval captain's 7 children in Austria during WWII. Maria soon brings laughter and music to the cold household, and thaws the captain's heart with her warmth. The movie includes the wonderful title song, "Do-Re-Mi", "My Favorite Things", "I Have Confidence in Me", and a host of other catchy tunes.

At the beginning of the film, Maria questions Captain von Trapp (Plummer) about why so many governesses have taken this position and quickly resigned: "What's wrong with the children, sir?" The captain responds with this brash quote.
3. "I think-- I think you're the most attractive of all my parents' friends. I mean that."

Answer: The Graduate

"The Graduate" (1967) was Dustin Hoffman's screen debut and costars Anne Bancroft and Katharine Ross. The movie follows Benjamin Braddock (Hoffman), a recent college graduate who doesn't know what to do with his life. Confused and depressed, he is soon propositioned by Mrs. Robinson (Bancroft), the sexy but middle-aged wife of his father's business partner. Figuring he has nothing to lose, Benjamin plunges into a loveless affair with the woman ... but a few months later he falls for her lovely daughter Elaine, who is visiting home from Berkeley.

Hoffman delivers the quote above in the Taft Hotel bedroom when he is reconsidering having an affair with Mrs. Robinson. The older woman asks Benjamin if he finds her unattractive, and Benjamin replies with this quote.
4. "You know those days when you get the mean reds?"

Answer: Breakfast at Tiffany's

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961) stars Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard in the story of Holly Golightly, a New York City playgirl looking for the ultimate sugar daddy. Peppard stars as Paul Varjak, a struggling writer who lives in the apartment above Holly thanks to his "benefactress," played by Patricia Neal. Holly and Paul are perfect for each other, but Holly is the only one who doesn't appear to recognize that fact.

Holly asks this question to Paul when they first meet in her apartment at the beginning of the film. She says the mean reds aren't like the blues because with the mean reds "you're afraid, but you don't know what you're afraid of."
5. "Maycomb was a tired old town, even in 1932 when I first knew it."

Answer: To Kill a Mockingbird

"To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962), starring Gregory Peck as the noble lawyer Atticus Finch, tells a story of racism in the Depression-era South through the eyes of a six-year-old girl named Scout. Scout's father, Atticus, is hired to defend a black man wrongfully accused of raping a white woman, and throughout the trial Atticus teaches his children about justice, integrity, tolerance, and responsibility.

The narrator, a grown-up Scout, gives these words at the very beginning of the film, before introducing the viewers to the characters.
6. "Everything you do irritates me. And when you're not here, the things I know you're gonna do when you come in irritate me!"

Answer: The Odd Couple

"The Odd Couple" (1968) stars Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau as Felix Unger and Oscar Madison (respectively), two divorced men who share an apartment together. Felix is a neurotic neat-freak; Oscar is a lazy slob. Together in this movie, they face some hilarious situations as they learn to live together!

Oscar says this to Felix when he's finally exasperated with his roommate. Here's the rest of this hilarious quote: "You leave me little notes on my pillow. Told you 158 times I can't stand little notes on my pillow. 'We're all out of cornflakes. F.U.' Took me three hours to figure out F.U. was Felix Unger!"
7. "I'm tired, I've been drinking since nine o'clock, my wife is vomiting, and there's been a lot of screaming going on around here!"

Answer: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

"Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1966) stars Elizabeth Taylor (Martha) and Richard Burton (George), married university intellectuals whose mind-warping psychological games nearly destroy them and newcomers Nick and Honey, a young couple, new to the university, who come to George and Martha's house late one night for drinks.

Nick (George Segal) says this quote after the two couples leave the roadhouse in the middle of the night.
8. "What we have here is [a] failure to communicate."

Answer: Cool Hand Luke

"Cool Hand Luke" (1967) stars Paul Newman in the title role as a stubborn, tough, and independent inmate in a Southern prison. Luke keeps his cool while angering both the chain-gang boss and the sadistic and redneck prison officer with his rebellious but icy attitude.

The prison officer, played by Strother Martin, delivers this classic line when he visits the misbehaving chaing-gang inmates working along the roadside.
9. "Close your mouth please, Michael, we are not a codfish."

Answer: Mary Poppins

"Mary Poppins" (1964) stars Julie Andrews in her screen debut (an Oscar-winning performance) as the magical nanny who comes to a London residence to care for the neglected children of two very busy parents.

After Mr. Banks hires her, Mary Poppins slides UP the banister, much to the amazement of Jane and Michael, the Banks children. When Mary Poppins reaches the second floor, she notices Michael's mouth standing open in awe and curtly tells him to close it.
10. "When you're in love with a married man, you shouldn't wear mascara."

Answer: The Apartment

"The Apartment," winner of the 1960 Best Picture Oscar, stars Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, and Fred MacMurray in a tale that is part comedy, and part drama. A lonely insurance clerk named C.C. Baxter (Lemmon) loans out his apartment to the higher-ups for their affairs. However, Baxter is devastated when he discovers that his crush, cute elevator operator Fran Kubelik (MacLaine), is having an affair with the ratty J.D. Sheldrake, Baxter's boss.

Shirely MacLaine's character says this quote to Sheldrake on Christmas Eve, after Sheldrake's secretary, Miss Olsen, told her about his many other affairs in the recent past with women at Consolidated Life.
