Answer: Baby shower

Kate is an SVP who doesn't seem to care about anyone but herself. She is incredibly driven, very blunt and works a lot. She doesn't treat the people she works with very well at all and she has no empathy for people who prioritize family over work. She learns that there is a baby shower happening where there is cake and joins the event only so she can grab a slice.

It is made very clear that her co-workers do not appreciate her abrasive manner and her pregnant co-worker turns her back on her.

Kate's brother Joe tries to call Kate several times but she does not call him back. He finally gets hold of her and asks him to watch his daughter Maddie for one night because his mother-in-law is dying and he needs to take care of her affairs. Kate does not want to help out but begrudgingly ends up doing so.

While there, she gets a call from Joe and his wife Cheryl to inform Kate that she is needed for a week not just one night. Kate is not happy about it.

Joe and Cheryl give Kate a list of food sensitivities that Maddie has but Kate pays no attention at all. She takes Maddie out to dinner every night and Maddie orders Chicken Parmesan, every night. One of the chefs at the restaurant even comments that she should eat a salad instead and Kate tries to get her to change it up but Maddie insists. Of course Maddie has a sensitivity to tomatoes and ends up having to go to the hospital.

The first time that Kate arrives at her brother's house, she encounters Jill. Jill is annoyed that the garage door is left open and tells Kate how dangerous it is for the kids on the street, that the neighbours are close knit, and that they keep an eye on each other's houses. Antisocial Kate wants nothing to do with Jill or her advice and ignores her, leaving the garage door up. Later in the movie, Jill's son ends up playing with the garage door and she races over to help him.

While trying to help him, she gets hit in the back when the garage door closes on her.

Answer: Karate

Maddie and her parents are at odds about who she is and what she wants to do. They insist that she act like a "girl" and drop her off at ballet every week. What they don't know is that she goes next door to take karate. The sensei says that she is so enthusiastic about karate that he just allows her to come to his lessons. Kate learns this and tries to help her talk to her parents about it but they're not happy and want her to stay in ballet.

Maddie is not your typical middle-schooler. She likes to make weapons and wear capes and she's a little pudgy. She gets bullied terribly by the girls at her school. Kate advises her not to take any nonsense from them and to fight back. Maddie takes that advice and the next day goes to school and gives a roundhouse kick to one of the girls. She gets suspended for that.

There is a dance coming up at school that Maddie's parents think is really important for her to go to so that she can make some friends. Maddie does not want to go because of the bullying that she is subjected to. Kate is asked to take Maddie dress shopping but Maddie doesn't want to wear dresses.

At the dress shop Maddie gets really angry and destroys a mannequin. Kate ends up buying her a pantsuit instead.

Kate's father is in rehab. Her brother Joe has tried to get her more involved with his care and support but she has only offered money. Kate softens as she spends time with Maddie and tries to build bridges with those she's hurt. She visits her father at rehab and has a nice moment with him. Her father apologizes for not being a great father to her in the past.

Maddie meets a group of boys at a gas station who are accepting and non-judgmental. They tell her they are Juggalos, the name for fans of the hardcore hip hop duo Insane Clown Posse. They state that Juggalos get a bad name because a small number engage in criminal behaviour but they explain to Kate and Maddie that they are actually selfless, giving, accepting and loving people. Maddie likes the acceptance she feels and ends up at a Juggalo event where Insane Clown Posse are performing. Kate goes there to look for her and enlists the help of the duo themselves and the scary looking but cooperative crowd to help find Maddie.

Kate is still pretty blunt but working on becoming a better person as a result of her week with Maddie. At work she is thrilled to be invited out by a couple of co-workers and instead of snubbing them to work, she gladly accepts. What makes the invitation all the more sweet is that it comes from the pregnant co-worker who didn't want anything to do with her at her baby shower.
