Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Sir, would you mind taking your feet off the table and put your shoes on, please?" "Yeah, I would mind. I'm havin' a bad night." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Casino

In this scene manager of the fictional Tangiers casino, Billy Sherbert (Don Rickles), has politely asked a gambler at a card table (Craig Vincent) this first line and he has replied with the second. Although the characters in "Casino" were fictionalized, the story was based on actual incidents and people.

In the 1996 Academy Awards, Sharon Stone (she played call girl/wife Ginger McKenna Rothstein) was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role but lost the Oscar to Susan Sarandon in "Dead Man Walking." Two historical notes: 1) Oscar Goodman, who played a small part in the movie as Sam Rothstein's attorney, was subsequently elected the Mayor of Las Vegas. 2) the real Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal (the movie character Sam "Ace" Rothstein, played by Robert De Niro, was based on his life) was permanently banned from the state of Nevada.
2. "But Delta's already on probation." "They are? Well, as of this moment, they're on *double, secret* probation!" Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Animal House

In this scene Faber College Dean, Vernon Wormer (John Vernon), discusses with Omega fraternity house president, Greg Marmalard (James Daughton), about how to get rid of Delta house, notorious for drunken parties, pranks and abysmally low school grades. Greg says the first line and the Dean then replies with the second. "Animal House" was filmed at and around the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR.

The President of the University had denied permission for the 1967 movie "The Graduate" to be filmed there, and he liked that movie so much when it came out that he decided he didn't want to miss another opportunity.
3. "The Grey Hair's children were under Magua's knife but escaped. They'll be under it again." "Why do you hate the Grey Hair, Magua?" Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Last of the Mohicans

In the events leading up to this scene, Indian scout Magua (Wes Studi) has lead a column of British soldiers, British Colonel Munro's two daughters, and frontiersman Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) to Colonel Munro at Fort William Henry (Magua calls him "Grey Hair").

However, Magua is actually allied with the French. In this scene the British situation is being discussed by Magua, French General Montcalm (Patrice Chéreau) and French Captain De Bougainville (Dylan Baker). Magua says the first line and General Montcalm asks him the second line.

In the 1993 Academy Awards "The Last of the Mohicans" won the Oscar for Best Sound. The movie soundtrack is one of my favorites.
4. "He has a knife." "That's not a knife. THAT'S a knife." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Crocodile Dundee

In this scene Crocodile Dundee (Paul Hogan) is enjoying a visit from Australia to New York City to visit the newspaper reporter who wrote a story about him (Linda Kozlowski). While taking a walk they are confronted by a mugger (Tony Holmes). She whispers the first line, but he pulls out a gigantic Bowie knife and says the second.

The mugger beats a hasty retreat. In the 1987 Academy Awards "Crocodile Dundee" was nominated for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen but lost to "Hannah and Her Sisters."
5. "What knockers!" "Oh, thank you doctor." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Young Frankenstein

This scene is typical Mel Brooks' humor (he was the director and co-writer of the screenplay). Doctor Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) is holding his well-endowed young lab assistant Inga (Terri Garr), who is wearing a low-cut dress. When he comments with the first line on some over-size doorknockers on the castle doors, she replies with the second.

In the 1975 Academy Awards "Young Frankenstein" was nominated for two Oscars but didn't win either. In the scene where Dr. Frankenstein and the monster (Peter Boyle) are dancing with top hats and canes (the "Puttin' on the Ritz" scene) it is Boyle who came up with a strangled version of "Puiinin on da reeez!"
6. "You don't wanna marry me." "Why don't you love me, Jenny? I'm not a smart man, but I know what love is." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Forrest Gump

In this scene Forrest (Tom Hanks) has asked Jenny (Robin Wright) to marry him and adds "I'd make a good husband, Jenny." She agrees, but says the first line. Forrest comments with the second. "Forrest Gump" won Best Picture in the 1995 Academy Awards and Tom Hanks won Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Forrest Gump.

The movie follows the life of low-I.Q. Forrest, including his accidental experiences with some of the most important people and events in America from the late 1950s through the 1970s, and his encounters with the love of his life, Jenny. Chevy Chase turned down the role of Forrest.
7. "I can't swim." "Are you crazy? The fall will probably kill ya." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

In the events leading up to this scene Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman), The Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) and their gang have just robbed a train. However, one of the train cars contains a posse of mounted Pinkerton detectives, who immediately give chase.

The gang splits off, but the posse continues to trail Butch and Sundance up in mountainous country. When they are confronted by a steep drop off to a river, Sundance prepares to fight to the death. Butch suggests they instead jump and Sundance says no.

When Butch persists, Sundance says the first line. An amused Butch replies with the second. Newman and Redford really did leap off a facsimile of the cliff but they landed on a mattress roughly six feet below. The actual death-defying jump was made by stunt men (although they actually are filmed jumping off a large crane into a lake).

In the 1970 Academy Awards, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was nominated in seven categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "Midnight Cowboy"). It did win four Oscars.
8. "Open the pod bay doors, HAL." "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: 2001: A Space Odyssey

In this scene space ship Discovery is on its way to Jupiter to learn about the origins of a back monolith, discovered on Earth's moon. Astronaut Dr. Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) has just requested that the HAL-9000 computer running things on the spaceship let him back aboard after a space walk by speaking the first line.

However HAL is attempting to take over the spacecraft and refuses to open the air lock. It speaks the second line (voice by Douglas Rain). "2001: A Space Odyssey" won the 1969 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and was nominated for three other awards, including Best Writing, Story and Screenplay - Written Directly for the Screen (by director Stanley Kubrick and author Arthur C. Clarke).
9. "It's funny, you know. It's a good story, it's funny, you're a funny guy." "What do you mean, you mean the way I talk?" Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Goodfellas

In this scene several mobsters are socializing at a nightclub when Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) tells a story. Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) reacts with the first line. Hair-trigger Tommy suddenly gets serious and says the second line and then adds, "You mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you?" He later acts like it was all an act and says, "I almost had him." Although the characters in "Goodfellas" were fictionalized, the story was based on actual incidents and people.

When the real Henry Hill entered the Witness Protection Program he was relocated to Redmond, WA, and while there he ran an Italian restaurant.

In the 1991 Academy Awards, Joe Pesci won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and "Goodfellas" was nominated but did not win in five more categories (including Best Picture). Best Picture that year was won by "Dances with Wolves."
10. "You know ______, I read about you all in the papers, and I just get scared." "Now Ms. Parker, don't you believe what you read in all them newspapers." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Bonnie and Clyde

In this scene Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) and Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway) have returned to Bonnie's hometown so Bonnie can see her mother (Mabel Cavitt). The mother speaks the first line and Clyde tries to reassure her with the second. In the 1968 Academy Awards. "Bonnie and Clyde" was nominated for ten Oscars, including Best Picture (but lost out to "In the Heat of the Night"). Estelle Parsons (who played Blanche, the wife of Clyde's brother Buck) won for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Warren Beatty, Michael J. Pollard , Gene Hackman, Faye Dunaway and director Arthur Penn were also nominated for awards but did not win.

This was Gene Wilder's first feature film (although he had some previous TV and Broadway experience).
