Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tree, as it seems, is murdered repeatedly on which day?

Answer: Her birthday

On September 18, 2017, Tree (Theresa) wakes up in a dorm room to find a guy - Carter - who she stayed with the previous night. She leaves shortly after, after taking a Tylenol, running into an ex-boyfriend on the way back to her sorority house. Her roommate, Lori, tells her of all the crazy things she ended up doing the night before while, at the same time, wishing her a happy birthday. Tree isn't thrilled. Late for class, she throws out Lori's birthday cupcake and shows up late for her lecture.

After a sorority meeting, she ends up meeting with her professor for a quick lunchtime affair.
2. Tree's murderer is frequently seen wearing which of these?

Answer: A mask

In the evening, Tree heads off to a post-game party on campus. Walking alone, she comes across a pedestrian tunnel that seems to be blocked off by caution signage. Inside, however, is a small music box playing 'Happy Birthday'. When she goes inside to investigate, she's approached from behind by a person wearing a hoodie and a mask of the school mascot. This leads to a chase, at the end of which Tree trips and falls and is stabbed by the killer.

To her surprise though, she wakes up immediately after. It's September 18, 2017 all over again.
3. Tree, attending the surprise frat party, still ends up getting killed.

Answer: True

When Tree wakes up she soon realizes that she's living through the same day, note-for-note, because the things she's seeing and the people she's running into seem to be hitting all the same points. It seems to be the ultimate deja vu, and the more she goes through the day, she realizes that she not only recognizes what's happening, but she can change things to get a different result.

At the end of the night, she avoids the pedestrian tunnel. The music box is still there, so she heads back the way she came and makes it to her destination, her friend Nick's frat house.

It turns out to be a good choice from the outset; they're throwing a surprise party for her. The night still ends horribly though; the killer gets to her and a guy while they're hooking up in his room, stabbing her with a shattered bong.
4. When Tree spends her day hiding in her room, the killer still gets to her by hiding in her closet.

Answer: False

Tree wakes up in her third iteration of September 18, 2017 in shock, realizing that she was still meant to die and that she's stuck reliving her final day over and over again. This time, instead of going through the same beats, she rushes away from Carter's dorm room and back home, terrified that she may be killed yet again.

She tells Lori that she's already lived through the day twice and though she doesn't really believe her, even though she seems to know about her cupcake and the surprise party, Lori tells her to stay in for the day. Tree does, this time skipping class and the sorority meeting to board up her room's windows, barricade herself in, and hang out alone.

It doesn't help. The killer still gets her, having been hiding in her bathroom.
5. Tree realizes that she can use her repeated days to do which of the following?

Answer: Investigate potential murderers

On her fourth go-about of September 18, 2017, Tree screams in pain as she awakens, getting caught up in her nightmare. This time, Carter follows her out of his dorm and hears her out. He doesn't think it's impossible, especially given all of the things she clearly knows about the day ahead, and he reasons that whoever wants to kill her knows it's her birthday and likely has motive.

It still proves to be a bit overwhelming, but Carter suggests that if she really wants to get to the bottom of things, she still has infinite lives to go through to figure out who's behind her murder. So that's what she does - she uses the lives and narrows down her suspect list, finding out a fair bit of dirt on her friends and foes in the meantime.
6. On one day, Tree ends up in a hospital bed. What ends up being the reason for this?

Answer: Her wounds seem to be compounding

On one September 18, 2017, after getting bludgeoned in the head by a baseball bat, Tree wakes up to find that the deaths she's experiencing are having a bit of a pile-up effect since she's feeling them more and more with each one. It gets to a point where she collapses before leaving Carter's, ending up in a hospital.

Her doctor ends up being Dr. Butler, who she's been having the affair with, and he tells her that she should be dead, especially considering the x-rays of past injuries she's sustained. Dr. Butler assures her that she should be safe in the hospital, but the killer arrives anyways, killing the doctor, and she flees, stealing Butler's car.

The police manage to catch her and take her into custody - a plan she believes will protect her from the killer - but the killer still manages to get the upper hand and send her back into the loop.
7. Tree ends up killing a local serial killer, believing him to be her murderer, but Carter is killed in the process. She decides to reset the loop to save Carter, but how does she do it?

Answer: She hangs herself

Waking up from the car accident, Tree finds herself on another September 18, 2017 and she tells Carter everything from the get-go, hoping to use him as a sounding board. This time around, while watching the news, Tree realizes that an escaped serial killer, John Tombs, was at the hospital when she was during her previous version of the day.

She heads to the hospital to make people aware of Tombs' likely escape, but he escapes anyways, killing Carter when he comes to help. A quick fight in a bell tower near the hospital results in Tree subduing the killer, but she realizes that Carter will be gone forever if she ends the day with a win. So instead, she races to the top of the tower and hangs herself at the top.
8. Eventually, Tree has a meal with which of these people, coming to terms with her grief and resolving to improve her life?

Answer: Her father

Tree wakes up after her suicide to find Carter still alive at the start of another September 18, 2017, and following through on a talk she had with him, she decides that since her chances seem to be running out (as she's getting weaker and weaker each new day), so she should make good on some issues she's had in the past.

This time, she makes good on everything. She interacts with everyone on the way out of Carter's (including her ex, Tim) before heading back to the sorority house and apologizing to Lori for being a lousy roommate.

Heading to Dr. Butler's class, Tree breaks up with him, admitting she should never have started seeing him. Instead, she kisses Carter when he meets her at lunch and then goes to meet her father for a birthday meal - something she never intended to do.

She apologizes to him and shares her grief about her mother's death three years earlier; she intends to make things right between them.
9. Surprisingly, Tree's final death occurs when she eats which of these?

Answer: Cupcake

After eating a birthday meal with her father, Tree outfits herself and heads to the hospital to stop John Tombs. She steals a cop's gun and fights Tombs in his hospital room, this time managing to fight and kill him without even leaving the building. This night she spends with Carter. The two of them light the cupcake Lori gave as a gift and Tree eats it.

She wakes up on September 18, 2017.

Of course, this should never have happened; she followed the rules but still ended up waking up on her birthday. She rushes to her sorority house and plans to leave, but Lori stops her to present her with her birthday cupcake. That's when Tree realizes she died because she ate the cupcake; it was something she'd never done until the previous version of the day, and it would have killed her in her sleep.
10. Who turns out to have been the killer the entire time?

Answer: Lori

When it clicks that she could have only died in her sleep because she ate the poisoned cupcake, Tree realizes that Lori must have been the killer the entire time. When she never ate the cupcake, Lori had to find another way to kill her, and since she had access to Tombs the entire time, working at the hospital, no one would assume there was a second killer. Lori denies it, but refuses to bite the cupcake, balking when Tree offers to take the cupcake to the police. Lori ends up admitting that she mainly wanted to kill Tree because of the affair with Dr. Butler. The two of them proceed to fight in their room before Tree force-feeds Lori the poison cupcake and kicks her out the bedroom window.

At lunch, Tree and Carter watch the news reports about the tragedy at the sorority house. Tree gets a call from her father and she still decides to go to lunch with him. Carter invites her to stay in his room since hers is a crime scene.

The next day, Tree wakes up on September 19, 2017.
