Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For their "farewell" show, this group played a concert at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco and had musical guests including Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond and Dr. John. Name the group who brought us "The Last Waltz"?

Answer: The Band

Filmed by Martin Scorsese in 1976 and released in 1978, "The Last Waltz" brought together many of The Band's musical influences as well as musicians they had played with. The Band started out playing with Ronnie Hawkins as the Hawks in the 1950s and backed up Bob Dylan in the 1960s (when they were referred to as "the band" and that became their name) before they went out on their own. Both Dylan and Hawkins as well as Neil Young, Eric Clapton and Muddy Waters--to name just a few, performed in the movie/concert.

Some of The Band's biggest hits were "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "The Weight" and "Up on Cripple Creek".
2. In this movie, Pink was ill so some bald guy, dressed all in black, showed up to play the concert but instead terrorized the audience. What band's music provided the soundtrack and story for this movie?

Answer: Pink Floyd

Based on Pink Floyd's album "The Wall", the movie was released in 1982. Roger Waters said the work was influenced by the story "The Wall" by Jean-Paul Sartre. Waters wrote the screenplay and the animation was done by Gerald Scarfe who had done the illustrations on "The Wall" album. Bob Geldof (Boomtown Rats) played Pink, who shaved his hair and eyebrows in the midst of his breakdown and thought he was a neo-Nazi dictator in the concert scene.
3. "Break Like the Wind" and "Smell the Glove" were a couple of the album titles for this fictitious band whose amp went to 11. Who were they?

Answer: Spinal Tap

Directed by Rob Reiner and released in 1984, "This is Spinal Tap" was a mock documentary of the band, Spinal Tap, whose members included Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel, Michael McKean as David St. Hubbins and Harry Shearer as Derek Smalls, David Kaff as Viv Savage and a succession of drummers who came to bad ends.

The movie was considered a modest success when released, but has grown into a cult favorite and paved the way for other mockumentaries, many of which were written by Christopher Guest and star some of the same actors as in "Spinal Tap".
4. What female rocker starred with Michael J. Fox in the movie, "Light of Day"?

Answer: Joan Jett

Filmed in the Chicago area (as well as Indiana and Ohio) and released in 1987, the movie featured Michael J. Fox and Joan Jett as siblings in a bar band in Ohio. The movie starred Gena Rowlands as their mother, who had a troubled relationship with Joan Jett's character, Patti Rasnick, an unwed mother. The movie also starred Michael McKean ("Spinal Tap", "Lavergne and Shirley") as a member of their band, the Barbusters.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts charted with "I Love Rock and Roll", a cover of "Crimson and Clover" and "I Hate Myself for Loving You". Her song, "Bad Reputation" was featured in the movie, "Shrek".
5. Penny Lane was the name of the "Band Aide" leader who followed the band, Stillwater. What was the name of this movie which made Kate Hudson a star?

6. Four guys were out to see KISS in this comedy from 1999. Name the movie.

Answer: Detroit Rock City

Starring Edward Furlong as Hawk, the movie was about a KISS cover band who were trying to see the band play a concert in 1978 and the obstacles they faced to do so. KISS did appear in the movie and the soundtrack featured other heavy metal bands of the time. The movie takes its title from a song by KISS.
7. In "Wayne's World", this well-known musician told us what Milwaukee meant in the Algonquin language. Who was this musician?

Answer: Alice Cooper

While backstage at an Alice Cooper concert, Alice told Wayne and Garth that Milwaukee was pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which was Algonquin for "the good land". "Wayne's World" starred Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey as Wayne and Garth, the hosts of a cable show filmed in Wayne's basement in Aurora, Illinois.

The band took the name, "Alice Cooper," in 1968. They put on great stage shows featuring props, dancers and special effects. Front man Vincent Damon Furnier took the name Alice Cooper for himself in 1975. The "Welcome to My Nightmare" tour was aired as a television special and Alice appeared on the "Muppet Show", the "Midnight Special" concert series in the 1970s and in film. Some of Alice's hits include "I'm Eighteen", "School's Out" and "Poison".
8. While the Beatles were not in this movie, the movie revovled around some teenagers trying to see the Beatles in their first appearance on the "Ed Sullivan Show". What was the name of this movie?

Answer: I Wanna Hold Your Hand

Starring Nancy Allen as Pam Mitchell, one of the girls did manage to get into their hotel room. Reflecting the Beatlemania of the time, the movie did a good job of showing just how crazy fans could be. There were also fun references to future Beatles songs that weren't recorded at the time of Beatlemania, as well as plenty of Beatles' music.

The movie was co-written and directed by Robert Zemeckis and was released in 1978.
9. The first of the Cheech and Chong movies, this one involved their band playing at a Battle of the Bands. "Earache My Eye" was the song that they performed as Cheech ran around in a tutu and Chong played drums while wearing a superhero costume. Name the movie.

Answer: Up in Smoke

The movie was released in 1978 and featured Stacy Keach as Sergeant Stedanko (Hard Hat Hard Hat) and Tom Skerritt as Strawberry. The plot centered around Cheech and Chong trying to purchase some pot and the many odd characters they met and situations they got themselves into. For instance, after being deported to Mexico, they unknowingly drove a truck made of marijuana back to Los Angeles.

"Earache My Eye" was a song first included on the comedy album, "Cheech & Chong's Wedding Album" released in 1974.
10. Cab Calloway sang "Minnie the Moocher" as the opening act for the band from which this movie got its title. Name the band/movie.

Answer: The Blues Brothers

Some of the musicians had played with Booker T and the M.G.s and others were from the "Saturday Night Live" band. Featured performers in the movie included James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles.
