Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Val Kilmer played Nick Rivers, a pop-singer-turned-hero who rescued a young woman's scientist father from the East Germans. Which movie does this describe?

Answer: Top Secret!

While visiting East Germany, Nick became involved with the French Resistance, after meeting Hillary Flammond. He helped them free Dr. Flammond from the East Germans, and even took care of a traitor within the resistance. One memorable scene from this zany movie included Nick rehashing what had taken place with Hillary. Hillary said, "I know.

It all sounds like some bad movie", then they both looked at the camera. Lucy Gutteridge played Hillary Flammond, and her father was played by Michael Gough, in Val Kilmer's movie debut from 1984. Gough and Kilmer later appeared together in "Batman Forever" (1995) as Alfred and Batman, respectively.
2. In "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (2000), which of our escapees opted not to get saved when they came across a preacher performing baptisms in a river?

Answer: Everett

Everett convinced Pete and Delmar to escape the chain gang with him, by telling them he had to retrieve some buried loot within a few days. Shortly after leaving cousin Wash's place, they noticed people walking towards the river, and followed them. Delmar ran in to be baptized, and came out saying that the preacher had washed away all of his sins and transgressions. Pete was sufficiently convinced to give it a go himself, but Everett just shook his head. George Clooney played Everett, Tim Blake Nelson played Delmar, and John Turturro played Pete.
3. In 1966's "What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?", a platoon of American soldiers was ordered by the higher ups to take over a small village in Italy. During which war did the movie take place?

Answer: WWII

The Americans arrived in the village to find the Italians ready to surrender, but only after they had their wine festival that evening. The Americans agreed and everyone enjoyed an evening of drinking, dancing and romance. The next morning, a brawl broke out between the Italians and the Americans over the mayor's daughter, just as a US plane was flying reconnaissance over the village. Since their superiors now thought that the Americans were in hand-to-hand combat with the Italians, they had to start staging mock battles whenever planes flew over. By coincidence, the Germans also saw the "fighting" and sent troops in to help their allies.

The cast of this hilarious movie included Dick Shawn, Sergio Fantoni, James Coburn, Harry Morgan and Carroll O'Connor.
4. God showed up and chose the assistant manager of a grocery store to be his spokesman here on Earth, in "Oh, God!" (1977). Who played God?

Answer: George Burns

Jerry Landers (John Denver) had a lot of questions for God at first, but he eventually accepted his task to tell people about Him. Jerry's words eventually landed him in court, where he invited God to appear. God showed up and asked to be sworn in, ending his oath with "So help me, Me". George Burns reprised his role in two sequels, "Oh, God! Book II" (1980), and "Oh, God! You Devil" (1984), where he also played Satan.
5. "Airplane!" (1980) contained a scene where a young girl's IV was yanked out of her arm by an over-enthusiastic flight attendant with a guitar.

Answer: True

Lisa and her mom were headed to the Mayo Clinic so that Lisa could have a heart transplant. Unfortunately, they boarded Flight 209. The flight attendant, Randy, borrowed a guitar from a nun, and then began singing a song for Lisa. As the tempo of the music increased, and the passengers became interested, Randy turned suddenly, and the guitar knocked out Lisa's IV tube. Lisa struggled for a moment, but managed to get the tube back in, just in time for Randy to knock it out again. Lisa was on a flight which lost its pilots because they chose the fish for dinner. Jill Whelan played Lisa, and Lorna Patterson played Randy.
6. "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" showed a couple whose love for each other had turned, for the most part, into contempt and bitterness, especially when alcohol was involved. Who played the couple, George and Martha?

Answer: Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor

After a party at her father's house, Martha invited a young professor and his wife, Nick and Honey (George Segal and Sandy Dennis), over to their house for drinks. George and Martha constantly belittled each other, eventually pulling their guests into the fray.

In addition to all four actors being nominated for Oscars, "Virginia Woolf" received nine other nominations including Best Picture. The movie won five awards, including Best Actress for Taylor and Best Supporting Actress for Dennis. Burton and Taylor were married two times, and appeared in eleven movies together.
7. In which of these movies did our protagonists encounter a singing bush and an invisible swordsman?

Answer: ¡Three Amigos!

Dusty, Ned and Lucky were run out of Santa Poco by El Guapo, but later returned to find that Carmen had been taken. They vowed to fight El Guapo, and then headed off into the sunset. In the next shot, we found out they had to go back to Santa Poco for directions to El Guapo's fortress.

The next day, they came upon a singing bush, singing a medley of tunes including "She'll be Coming Round the Mountain" and "Blow the Man Down". Ned and Lucky tried to get its attention, asking if it was the singing bush, until Lucky finally said, "Forget it. My guess is, this is the singing bush".

Then, according to the instructions to summon the invisible swordsman, Ned and Lucky uttered the right words and fired one shot in the air each. Dusty said his words, but fired his shot to the side, killing the invisible swordsman. By sheer luck, a plane flying overhead led them to El Guapo's, where the Amigos managed to free Carmen. Chevy Chase, Martin Short and Steve Martin played Dusty Bottoms, Ned Nederlander and Lucky Day, in 1986's "¡Three Amigos!".
8. In the post-Civil War southwest, a cavalry outpost was chosen for an experiment to see if camels could be more efficient than horses in the desert. Which movie was this?

Answer: Hawmps!

The men, mistakenly believing they were getting fine Arabian horses, weren't too thrilled when they saw the animals they were expected to ride. James Hampton, Chris Connelly, Slim Pickens and Jack Elam starred in this comedic film, which was loosely based on the real life US Camel Corps, an experiment conducted in the 1850s.
9. The cast of 1969's "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" included Gig Young, Jane Fonda, Michael Sarrazin, Red Buttons, Bonnie Bedelia and Bruce Dern. What was the main setting in the movie?

Answer: Dance hall

During the Depression, desperate couples were willing to exhaust themselves as they competed for the prize money in a dance marathon that could go on for weeks, and even months. With few other options, Gloria (Jane Fonda) showed up to enter, but her partner was not allowed because he was sick. Robert (Michael Sarrazin) was enlisted as her partner for the grueling challenge, but the two of them eventually quit after finding out the contest wasn't what it appeared to be. Gloria's hopelessness and disillusionment inevitably resulted in a tragic and heartbreaking end for both she and Robert.

The film was nominated for nine Academy awards, winning Best Supporting Actor for Gig Young's portrayal of the manipulative emcee at the dance marathon.
10. Which of these films had a sequel whose title included "Part Deux"?

Answer: Hot Shots!

Mostly spoofing "Top Gun", "Hot Shots!" (1991) was about a former Navy pilot (Topper Harley, played by Charlie Sheen) who was asked to return to active duty. In addition to completing a dangerous mission, Topper managed to expose an aerospace firm's underhanded dealings as well.

In the sequel, "Hot Shots! Part Deux" (1993), Topper returned for a "Rambo" spoof, where a rescue party had to be rescued from Iraq.
