Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main character in the movie was an FBI agent Neville Flynn. Which actor played this character in the movie?

Answer: Samuel Jackson

'Snakes on a Plane', released in 2006, starred Samuel Jackson as the central character, FBI agent Neville Flynn. Nathan Phillips played the role of Sean Jones in the movie. Byron Lawson was Eddie Kim, a notorious gangster. Denzel Washington did not act in the movie.

Samuel L Jackson is a popular American actor, who received accolades for his performance in the 1994 film 'Pulp Fiction'. His performance won him a BAFTA Best Supporting Actor award and an Oscar nomination. Some other popular films that starred Jackson include 'A Time to Kill', 'Die Hard with a Vengeance', 'Jurassic Park', 'Kill Bill:Vol 2', and 'Sphere'. He is well-known for his portrayal of the character Jedi Master Mace Windu in the 'Star Wars' series (Episodes I, II & III).
2. Why were snakes introduced into the plane?

Answer: To kill a witness in a case, who was a passenger

Sean Jones (Nathan Phillips) was an important witness for the FBI in a case against gangster Eddie Kim. At the start of the movie, Sean witnessed a murder committed by Eddie Kim. Eddie's gangsters decided to kill Sean, as he was the only witness. Sean was saved by FBI agent Neville Flynn, who promised him protection if he deposed against Eddie.

The gangsters learnt that Flynn and his colleague Sanders were escorting Sean to Los Angeles in a South Pacific flight. They decided to introduce the snakes into the plane, so that Sean did not reach LA to depose against Eddie.
3. How did the snakes enter the plane?

Answer: In a crate

The snakes were smuggled into the plane in a crate. (How the crate evaded detection by airport security was shown at the end of the movie, along with the credits.) The crate had a timer activated explosive. As the flight reached midway, the timer device exploded and opened the crate, letting loose the snakes all over the plane.
4. Why did the snakes behave aggressively and attack everyone in the plane?

Answer: Because of the presence of pheromones

As the passengers boarded the plane in Honolulu, they were garlanded with leis. The gangsters had sprayed the leis with a spray containing pheromones. The purpose of the pheromones was to make the snakes aggressive, causing them to attack when they smelled the pheromones.
5. Who, among the following, did NOT die as a result of the snake attack?

Answer: Sean Jones

The snakes started their attack by first killing an amorous couple in the bathroom. Soon the snakes spread all over the plane, causing mayhem and killing passengers left and right. The pilot was the next to die, followed by Agent Sanders. Later on the snakes killed the co-pilot. Sean Jones (Nathan Phillips) was one of the heroes of the movie and (naturally) did not die!
6. Who safely maneuvered the plane and prevented it from crashing into the ocean?

Answer: Flynn and Claire

The pilot was killed by the snake and the co-pilot flew the plane. The co-pilot was also bitten by a snake and he fell into an opening below the cockpit. Without anyone to fly it, the plane lost altitude and was headed towards the ocean. Agent Flynn and air hostess Claire Miller (Julianne Margulies) managed to bring up the plane, after which co-pilot Rick who was not dead, switched on the auto-pilot.
7. Agent Flynn was not able to identify all the snakes on the plane and as a result the anti venom was not kept ready at the airport.

Answer: False

Agent Flynn contacted his LA agent who took the help of a snake expert named Dr. Price. Since there were a large number of snakes of different types, Dr. Price asked Flynn to collect the dead snakes. With the help of a mobile phone camera belonging to socialite Mercedes (Rachel Blanchard), Flynn ensured that the images of all the snakes were sent to Dr. Price.

The FBI, along with Dr. Price, raided a snake dealer and they discovered that he was the man who supplied the snakes to the gangsters. Dr. Price managed to find the anti-venom for all the snakes, which was ready at the LA airport.
8. Why did agent Flynn blow out the windows of the plane?

Answer: To send out the snakes from the plane

As the snakes continued their killing spree, they killed both the pilot and co-pilot. Agent Flynn lost his cool and decided to blow out two windows of the plane, so that the air pressure change sucked out all the snakes from the plane. He asked all the remaining passengers and staff to buckle up and then shot two windows.

The resulting rush of air sucked out all the snakes (including the python with a half-eaten corpse!). Thus Flynn managed to rid the plane of the snakes.
9. How did Agent Flynn manage to land the plane?

Answer: With the help of a rapper's bodyguard

After the death of both the pilot and co-pilot, Agent Flynn was worried about how to land the plane. Rapper Three Gs, who was a passenger, told Flynn that his bodyguard Troy knew how to fly a plane. Flynn later on found that the only flight experience Troy had was playing a flight simulator video game. Flynn and Troy managed to land the plane with instructions from the control tower.
10. Why did Agent Flynn shoot Sean at the end of the movie?

Answer: To save him from a snake

At the end of the movie, after the plane landed, Flynn shot at Sean. One snake, which had remained in the plane, jumped on Sean and Flynn shot the snake dead. Sean was hit by the bullet, but nothing happened to him as he was wearing a bullet proof vest.

The movie featured 450 snakes. Most of the snake attack sequences were digitally created. In the movie 31 characters died as a result of the snake attack. The movie ended on a happy note with anti-venom administered to all the survivors bitten by the snakes. The movie ended with Sean teaching Flynn how to surf.
