Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song mentions ashtrays?

Answer: Maybe

"Maybe" is a ballad of optimism at the beginning of all the movies. Annie believes that her parents are still alive, and will one day return for her. In "Maybe," she sings about what she thinks her parents are like. One of the things she believes they do is "collect things like ashtrays and art." In the 2014 movie, as soon as the fake parents tell her that they don't collect those things, that's when she learns that they are not her real parents. Aileen Quinn, the actress who played the title character in the 1982 movie, said this was her favorite song in the movie.
2. Which song from the Broadway musical and the 1999 movie reminds you that Hawaii and Alaska weren't U.S. states at the time that the show or movie takes place?

Answer: N.Y.C.

"N.Y.C." is a song that Daddy Warbucks and Grace sing to Annie after they learn that she has never been allowed to leave the orphanage and has never seen much of New York City. Grace and Daddy Warbucks decide to take Annie to Radio City Music Hall for a movie, and Daddy Warbucks ultimately decides that they will walk there, so they can show Annie what New York City has to offer as they sing this song. The line: "No other town in the whole forty-eight can half compare to you" reminds us that this takes place during the Great Depression, when the United States only had 48 states. It also lets us know that Daddy Warbucks sees New York City as a town while everyone else thinks of it as a city (That is what the "C" stands for).

This song is in the Broadway musical, but the only movie that it appears in is the 1999 one. In the 1982 one, this is removed and replaced with "Let's Go to the Movies." In the 2014 one, this is removed and replaced with "The City's Yours." All the songs basically serve the same purpose, though. They're all about showing Annie things that she hadn't been allowed to see.
3. Which song goes "Ba-ba-boo?"

Answer: I Don't Need Anything But You

"And what's that bathtub tune you always ba-ba-boo" "Ba-ba-ba anything but you!" Apparently Annie and Daddy Warbucks are so happy together, it doesn't matter if they are saying real words. This song comes near the end of the musical and all the movies, after Annie and Daddy Warbucks have become so happy that Daddy Warbucks wants to adopt Annie and she wants to be adopted by him. She doesn't even want her real parents to come back for her anymore.
4. In which song, unique to the 1982 movie, does Miss Hannigan say that she wants to run her fingers through Daddy Warbucks' hair?

Answer: Sign

"Sign" is a song that appears when Daddy Warbucks comes to the orphanage wanting to adopt Annie. Miss Hannigan doesn't want Daddy Warbucks to get Annie, so she tries to seduce him. He says that she will "Rot in jail" if she doesn't sign the adoption papers. So she signs them after saying "Why didn't you say so in the first place?" even though he said "Sign" dozens of times.

During the song, Miss Hannigan says that she wants to run her fingers through Daddy Warbucks' hair. Apparently she does not notice that he has no hair.
5. Which song mentions the Chrysler Building?

Answer: It's the Hard Knock Life

After Miss Hannigan is awakened late at night by Annie singing "Maybe," she punishes all the orphans by telling them to clean the building until it shines like the top of the Chrysler Building. Later in the story, Annie tells Daddy Warbucks that Miss Hannigan never lets the orphans leave the orphanage, so we never learn exactly HOW Miss Hannigan thought the orphans would know what the Chrysler Building looks like. Molly repeats Miss Hannigan's "Chrysler Building" comment in a mocking imitation while the orphans are cleaning the building and singing "It's the Hard Knock Life."
6. Which song foreshadows Daddy Warbucks' misogynistic views?

Answer: I Think I'm Gonna Like it Here

"I Think I'm Gonna Like it Here" is the song that Daddy Warbucks' servants sing to Annie to inform her what life will be like with Daddy Warbucks. Annie is used to being treated very badly so she is shocked to learn that she will be treated like a queen at Daddy Warbucks' place.

However, the servants tell Annie "We never had a little girl" to warn Annie that Daddy Warbucks is sexist. Daddy Warbucks, who enters as soon as the song is over, confirms what the song said. He says that he wanted an orphan boy, not an orphan girl.

However, Grace tells Daddy Warbucks that he didn't specify that he wanted a boy and Daddy Warbucks reluctantly accepts Annie as a guest. Over time, Daddy Warbucks and Annie grow to love each other.
7. Which song has the word "Brother" in it?

Answer: You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile

The orphan girls hear this song on the radio, then they all sing it together. According to the song, only a "Brother" is never fully dressed without a smile, so according to the song, all those girls can frown all they want and they'll still be fully dressed.
8. What does Miss Hannigan think should be prohibited?

Answer: Little girls

"Someday I'll land in the nut house with all the nuts and the squirrels. There I'll stay until the prohibition of little girls." Miss Hannigan sings "Little Girls" to lament how tired she is of the orphans. While she is singing, the other orphans pull pranks on her or attack her, probably as revenge for the way she treats them.

In the 1999 movie, she reprises this line in the song at the end of the movie while she's being tied up and taken away, probably as a hint to where she's being taken to.
9. In which song do we learn that Rooster's and Agatha's mom somehow went to hell after she died even though she was "Sainted"?

Answer: Easy Street

"Easy Street" is the villain song of the musical, though you wouldn't guess it by how happy the song's chorus sounds. Miss Hannigan has learned that Daddy Warbucks wants to adopt Annie. This makes Miss Hannigan very upset. Annie had tried to run away from home, and just after she gets brought back to the orphanage, she gets rewarded and not punished. To Miss Hannigan, that seemed unfair. However, her brother walks in with his new girlfriend Lily St. Regis, telling Miss Hannigan that he got out of jail on good behavior and now he wants to become rich. Later, he and Lily come back in disguise, claiming to be Annie's parents. They fool Miss Hannigan, but then they remove their disguises and reveal who they are. They tell Miss Hannigan that they are going to trick Mr. Warbucks into thinking that they are Annie's parents so they can get the $50,000 that he promised them, and that they need Miss Hannigan's help to get information about Annie. Miss Hannigan does this on the condition that she gets half the money.

At both these points in the movie, Miss Hannigan, Rooster, and Lily sing the song "Easy Street" together, a song about tricking people and becoming rich. In the first verse, Rooster and Miss Hannigan sing about what their mother told them. Rooster says that their mom is "Sainted," but then he and Miss Hannigan sing together "We know you're down there listening," which suggests that she is in hell, although I don't know how you can be in hell if you're "Sainted."
10. Fill in the blank: "I love you,____"

Answer: Tomorrow

"Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love you, tomorrow, you're only a day away" (or, "You're ALWAYS a day away," depending on which version of "Annie" you are watching). In the most famous song in the musical, Annie sings "I love you," but she isn't saying that to any one person. She isn't even saying that to the dog (like I thought she was at first). The recipient of the phrase "I love you" is the word "Tomorrow." "Tomorrow" is what she loves. She loves tomorrow, because her past and present have always been bleak (missing her parents and living in an orphanage run by a woman who treats her and her friends badly) so the only good times she may ever experience are in the future. Her optimism, expressed in this song and "Maybe," is what keeps her going. Things do eventually get better for her.

Later, she says "I love you Daddy Warbucks," never "I love you Mr. Warbucks."

The orphans say "We love you Miss Hannigan." None of them ever say "I love you Miss Hannigan."

Annie never says "I love you" to Sandy.
