Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did the director meet Stevie?

Answer: He met him through Big Brothers.

Steven James, the director, was Stevie's Big Brother in the early eighties. James hadn't seen Stevie since 1985, and had always felt guilty about abandoning Stevie. The film begins with James' first visit with Stevie in 1995.
2. What other documentary film did the director of "Stevie" direct?

Answer: Hoop Dreams

"Hoop Dreams" is an excellent documentary, which follows the lives of two high school boys as they try to follow their dreams of being professional basketball players.
3. How was Stevie employed when we first see him in the movie?

Answer: he didn't have a job.

We learn in the movie that Stevie had a great deal of trouble keeping jobs. This is likely because of the poor economy in Southern Illinois, and his lack of employable skills. He is employed only once in the movie. Just prior to being sentenced to prison, Stevie works at a carnival.
4. Stevie lives just outside a city or town. Which city or town?

Answer: Ponoma, Illinois

Stevie and his family live in the countryside just outside Ponoma, which is located in Southern Illinois. His grandmother lives in a house on a large property, while his sister and her husband live in a trailer on the same property. At the beginning of the film, Stevie is living with his grandmother. Later in the film he lives in a trailer with his fiancee, on the same property as his sister and grandmother.
5. Stevie always lived with his mother while growing up.

Answer: False

Stevie's mother gave him to his grandmother to raise when he was just six months old. We learn through the film that Stevie bounced back and forth between his mother and grandmother, living mostly with the latter, until he was put into foster care.
6. What is Stevie's girlfriend's name?

Answer: Tonya

Although her parents disapprove of the relationship, Tonya remains loyal to Stevie throughout the film. She seems conflicted about the relationship, but she loves him, though she doesn't know why.
7. A couple of years pass between the beginning of the film, where we first meet Stevie, and the main body of the movie. When we see Stevie again, he is in jail. What is he accused of?

Answer: sexually molesting his cousin

Stevie is eventually convicted of molesting his eight year old cousin. Stevie asserts his innocence throughout the film, but there really is no question as to his guilt.
8. Where does Stevie's sister work?

Answer: Lowe's

Steven James agrees to buy Stevie a combination Christmas/birthday present. They go to Lowe's, hoping to take advantage of Brenda's employee discount on a stereo. Unfortunately, they don't get the discount, and James ends up spending more than he'd wanted to.
9. Steven James gives Stevie $100 for bail money.

Answer: False

James' wife won't let him bail Stevie out. As a social worker who treats sexual offenders, she is certain that Stevie is guilty. She is very worried about what Stevie might do if he is let out on bail. We never find out who bails Stevie out - his sister says his grandmother put up the money, while his grandmother says his sister did.
10. What is Stevie's aunt's name?

Answer: Wendy

Wendy is Stevie's mother's sister. Stevie is accused of molesting Wendy's daughter while babysitting. Wendy is understandably livid when we first see her in the movie. However, in a later interview, she expresses pity for Stevie, suggesting that both his mother and grandmother share responsibility for the poor state of his life.
11. Which of the following is NOT true about Stevie and his family?

Answer: Stevie's mother married his father.

Only Stevie's mother knows the identity of Stevie's father. At one point in the movie, Stevie's sister states that Stevie's father was married to someone other than his mother at the time of his conception, but aside from this, we are given no other clue as to who his father might be. Even Stevie is unaware of his father's identity.
12. In his court case, Stevie is offered a deal. He can plead guilty to a lesser charge, in exchange for time served and counselling.

Answer: True

He is offered this deal after his confession is thrown out of court. Amazingly, Stevie turns this deal down. He states his that he does not wish to have a sexual felony charge on his record. As well, he makes it clear he doesn't believe he needs couselling.
13. There was an irregularity in Stevie's arrest. What was it?

Answer: He was not read his Miranda rights.

Stevie is not read his rights, which lead to his confession being suppressed.
14. Stevie changes lawyers in the movie. Why?

Answer: He didn't think a woman could adequately represent him.

Although his first lawyer does a great job getting his confession suppressed, Stevie doesn't want a female lawyer. It becomes apparent in the movie that his second lawyer, while competent, doesn't really know how to talk to Stevie. In fact, it is implied in the movie that Stevie's lawyer gives Stevie false hope about the case, and his ability to keep Stevie out of prison.
15. At the end of the movie, Stevie is sentenced to prison. How long is his sentence?

Answer: Ten years

Stevie is sentenced to ten years, although we learn later that the judge was prepared to give him a six year sentence if only he'd shown some remorse for what he'd done. The prosecution was asking for twenty years in prison.
