Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who played Sheriff Jason McCullough?

Answer: James Garner

The sheriff was played by James Garner, who also starred as "Maverick" in the TV series of the same name. James Garner also had a cameo role in the 1994 movie version of the show where he played Maverick's father, instead of the lead role.
2. How did the new sheriff prove to the mayor and town council that he was worthy of becoming sheriff?

Answer: He shot a bullet through a washer that he tossed into the air.

He actually shot at the washer twice. The first time he did it, he told the on lookers that the bullet went right through the hole in the center of the washer. That, of course, wasn't good enough for the Mayor, so he placed a piece of tape over the washer hole and asked the sheriff to do it again.

When he did it again, and the tape had a bullet hole through it, the Mayor apologized and said "I hope you didn't take offense at any thing I might have said."
3. The new sheriff told the Mayor that he was only willing to take the position on a temporary basis because he was just passing through on his way to where?

Answer: Australia

When asked by one of the council members why he was going to Australia, the sheriff said that he wanted to be a pioneer and see the last of the frontier. One of the councilmen then said "Wait a minute, I thought that this was the last of the frontier and we were the pioneers!"
4. What was the first official duty the sheriff performed after he accepted the job?

Answer: He arrested Joe Danby for murder.

While standing in a saloon at the beginning of the movie, before becoming sheriff, he witnessed Joe Danby trick a man during a gunfight and kill him. Joe Danby told onlookers that the other guy drew first and it was a fair fight. The new sheriff-to-be told Joe, in front of everyone, that he cheated by faking to draw with his left hand while the whole time he was drawing his gun with his right and drew first.

He said it was an old Arizona trick but he had seen it used as far north as Montana.
5. The sheriff insisted to the Mayor that he be allowed to do a little something on the side during his stint as sheriff. What "on the side" activity did the sheriff wish to pursue?

Answer: prospecting for gold

The sheriff thought that the 150 dollar salary wasn't quite enough pay because of the high cost of living in the town, and the constant raising of prices of everyday necessities. He felt he needed to subsidize his income in some way in order to get by. Since the town had recently became famous for a gold strike in the local cemetery, the sheriff thought prospecting for some gold would be a good sideline.
6. The sheriff picked out a scruffy looking town local named Jake to be his deputy. What was Jake's job before becoming deputy?

Answer: horse holder at Madam Orr's house

Jake was played by one of the most famous and recognizable western side-kick actors of all time, Jack Elam. Elam had regular occurring roles in the TV series "Gunsmoke", "The Rifleman" and "Cheyenne". Since Jake was the town buffoon, the Mayor asked the sheriff why he chose a character like Jake to be deputy.

The sheriff said it was because Jake backed him up without hesitation while he arrested Joe Danby in the tavern, and that he would have had to search a long time to find somebody else with that type of loyalty and quick thinking.
7. When Pa Danby learned about his son being arrested, he went to the sheriff's office to threaten the sheriff into releasing his son. Pa Danby walked up to the new sheriff, pulled his gun, and stuck it in the sheriff's face. What did the sheriff do?

Answer: He stuck his finger in the barrel of Pa Danby's gun.

Much like putting a potato in the exhaust of a car, the sheriff knew that if Pa Danby tried to fire his gun with something blocking the barrel, it would blow up in his face. When Pa Danby told the sheriff that very thing, the sheriff said "Well it wouldn't have done my finger a lot of good either now. Would it?"
8. Because the Danbys ruled the town before there was law and order, they decided to hire some outside help to kill the new sheriff. The first two hired gunmen were shot and killed by the sheriff. How did the sheriff decide to deal with the third hired gunman who tried to kill him?

Answer: He threw rocks at him and chased him out of town.

After he shot the second gunman, the sheriff grew tired of killing people. When he found out there was a third gunman looking for him, he filled his pockets with rocks and confronted the gunman. When the gunman said "Draw!", the sheriff said "You go to blazes" and started throwing rocks at him and chased him out of town.
9. What embarrassing thing happened to the mayor's daughter, Prudy, while she was preparing dinner for the new sheriff and her father?

Answer: The back of her dress caught fire.

Through the entire movie, it was obvious that the Mayor's daughter Prudy Perkins, played by Joan Hackett, was in love with the new sheriff. The problem with the relationship was that every time the two got together, Prudy would do something embarrassing, goofy, or stupid, which messed up their meetings and led to very comical moments.

As Prudy was getting ready to serve dinner, she backed up against the stove and didn't realize that her bustle had caught fire.
10. While out prospecting for gold, the sheriff and Jake decided to take a break for lunch. Because there was a creek close by, they decided to have fish. What fishing method did they use to catch their lunch?

Answer: Dynamite

Since they were prospecting for gold, they carried only dynamite and digging tools with them. After the dynamite that was tossed into the creek exploded, Jake waded in and grabbed the fish that floated to the top of the water.
