Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What caused a notable delay in Howard's filming of "Hell's Angels"?

Answer: lack of clouds

After viewing his aerial footage, Howard realized that there was no point of reference to show how fast the airplanes were flying. He decided that there needed to be clouds in the background. Howard hired a meteorologist, Professor Fitz, to tell him where and when there would be clouds in the sky (ones which, in Howard's words, resembled giant breasts filled with milk).
2. Who attended the "Hell's Angels" premiere with Howard?

Answer: Jean Harlow

"Hell's Angels" was Jean Harlow's breakout role. She attended the premiere with a very nervous Howard.
3. When Howard and Kate were at the Coconut Grove, what did Errol Flynn take off Howard's plate?

Answer: pea

After Errol picked one of the perfectly laid-out peas from Howard's plate, germophobe Howard couldn't eat his meal. He and Kate left the club shortly after it happened.
4. Where did the Hughes' wealth come from?

Answer: drill bits

Howard Hughes' father, Howard Sr., invented a drill bit for oil drilling, and founded Hughes Tool Company. Howard inherited the company at a young age and left Texas to produce movies. He corrected someone in the movie who assumed that, being from Texas, Howard's wealth came from oil.
5. What airline did Howard buy a controlling interest in?

Answer: TWA

Howard had a controlling interest in TWA, whose rival, Pan Am, was run by Juan Trippe. Trippe controlled Senator Brewster, who was trying to get a bill passed that would give Pan Am full control of international air routes.
6. Who was in the photographs which Howard tried to obtain from Roland Sweet?

Answer: Kate and Spencer Tracy

Howard and Kate separated after she met and fell in love with Spencer Tracy. In order to protect Kate from a scandal, since Spencer Tracy was a married man, Howard tried to obtain the photos from Sweet by whatever means necessary. When Howard told Sweet to name his price, Sweet asked for shares of TWA.
7. Howard defended his film "The Outlaw" before the censorship board. What did the censors find objectionable in the film?

Answer: cleavage

Howard appeared before Joseph Breen and the censors with his mammary expert (Professor Fitz, the meteorologist). He had enlarged photos showing the cleavage of Claudette Colbert, Rita Hayworth and others, from films which were approved by the board. Howard had Prof. Fitz use calipers to measure the amount of cleavage shown, to prove that the cleavage displayed by Jane Russell in "The Outlaw" was no more than in the other films.
8. After the FBI had been through Howard's house, Howard was a physical and emotional mess. Who came over and helped Howard get himself cleaned up?

Answer: Ava

Howard panicked when the FBI came into his home and were "touching things". Afterwards, he was only staying in certain areas of his house, that he called "germ-free zones". Ava arrived at Howard's house and attempted to enter the study to get a drink. Howard tried to stop her, but she removed the string barriers and saw all of the used tissues everywhere.

Despite Howard's warnings of the dangers in the room, Ava said she would take her chances. Ava shaved Howard and helped him dress.
9. What was the name of the large plane Howard spent years building (nicknamed the "Spruce Goose")?

Answer: Hercules

Howard was building a huge plane for the military which could carry 750 passengers plus equipment.
10. Did Howard's so-called "Spruce Goose" fly?

Answer: Yes

Howard was brought before a congressional committee as a war profiteer, because he wouldn't submit to Senator Brewster's blackmailing. At the request of Pan Am's Juan Trippe, Senator Brewster had asked Howard to sell TWA to Trippe, or risk having his personal and financial troubles exposed at the hearings. Howard managed to pull himself together and turn the tables on Senator Brewster, thereby defeating Juan Trippe. Howard assured the committee that his plane would fly, and went on to prove it.
