Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Besides the name of the documentary, what is Grey Gardens?

Answer: mansion

Grey Gardens is the estate where the two Edies resided. They lived alone, only the two of them, for nearly three decades, except for the times when guests would sometimes unknowingly overstay their welcome.
2. How were the two Edies related?

Answer: mother and daughter

The two Edies were mother and daughter who resided together, virtually alone, for close to three decades. Little Edie Beale returned home by request of her mother Big Edie, for what she believed or hoped was only a brief visit or moderately short stay. She did not ever leave her mother's house again to live on her own, until her mother passed away.
3. Edie Bouvier Beale was the aunt to which famous woman?

Answer: Jackie Kennedy

Edie Senior was a Bouvier and so was her niece Jackie! Jackie's second husband Aristotle Onassis actually gave the two Edies $30,000 approximately, to give the dilapidating-before-its-time estate a facelift. The money was paid to the refurbisher/s, but only a meager amount of painting was done and the roof was supposedly repaired.
4. Which brother duo filmed the documentary "Grey Gardens"?

Answer: Maysles brothers

The Maysles had help in the editing process from Ellen Hovde, Muffie Mayer, and Susan Froemke. The Maysles brothers have also made a documentary about the late, great, best actor who ever existed...Marlon Brando.
5. What was the elder Edie trained to do in her younger years?

Answer: sing

She was a trained singer, who did record at least one album. In the documentary, she sings along to a song on record, "Tea for Two". She had a long relationship with her piano accompanist, but he severed ties with her eventually.
6. What was one of the main activities Little Edie enjoyed doing in her spare time?

Answer: swimming

Little Edie Beale loved swimming and the beach. Since the sea was visible from a deck at the mansion, it was little more than a hop, skip, and a jump away. She would head down the road and before reaching the turnoff to the beach, she would take a right over a small fence, to take the shortcut she had carved herself ages before.

It was a bee line to the stretch of shore she wanted to occupy.
7. Where was the residence of the two Edie Beales located?

Answer: East Hamptons

The mansion still stood at the same location in the early 21st century, though reconstructed inside and out. Little Edie sold the house and property two years after her mother's death. She then got back to her song and dance career, onstage. It was a short lived accomplishment of a life long dream.
8. Besides by his given name, what did Little Edie call their handy man Jerry?

Answer: The Marble Faun

"The Marble Faun" was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Big Edie seemed to really hold Jerry in high regard. He was allowed to stay around as much and as long as he did, because the elder of the two Edies didn't mind him there for the most part. I feel he may have brought a little spice, drama, and companionship to the what must been lonely and boring at times, household. I could be mistaken, but Mother Beale seemed to welcome and enjoy a male presence around when possible.

The younger Edie seemed to get less enjoyment from Jerry's arrivals, and showed him less appreciation than her mother did. I do not believe she hated him, but as with most of the guests at Grey Gardens she may have felt that he received more gratitude and respect from her mother, especially since she was the one who dropped out of her life, to return to her mother's home and care for her until she passed, nearly three decades later.
9. What was the lone animal that Little Edie used to feed in the attic?

Answer: raccoon

Little Edie would religiously put food out for her ever returning visitor. The raccoon eventually destroyed the better part of a wall due his destructive ways. The two Edies also acquired, fed, raised, and sheltered dozens of kittens and cats. Most were outdoor residents, but a few or so favorites and/or needy felines were allowed the privilege to accompany the two women full time inside the dwelling.
10. There was a character in the documentary who lost her own mother, so she used to come visit Big Edie. What was her first name?

Answer: Lois

Lois used to come visit Big Edie and she was quite close to her. She was welcomed by Big Edie, but only tolerated by Little Edie. Lois is a semi well known artist whose paintings are mostly of the Edies.
