Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Adina, Tatyana, Belcore, Nemorino. Which of them wouldn't you find in Donizetti's "L'elisir d'amore"?

Answer: Tatyana

Nemorino loves Adina, who is enamored with Belcore. A traveling fraud offers Nemorino a love elixir that will make women fall in love with him. Too bad it's only wine. Tatyana loves the title character in Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin".
2. Dick Johnson, Kate Barlow, Jack Rance, Minnie. Who's out of place in "La Fanciulla del West"?

Answer: Kate Barlow

This Puccini opera, written in Italian, takes place in the American Old West. Minnie is a barmaid in love with Dick Johnson, who's sought for thievery by the sheriff Jack Rance, who also loves Minnie. Kate Barlow is a character in the book "Holes" by Louis Sachar.
3. Who isn't among the cast of "Der Rosenkavalier": Octavian, Sophie, Marzelline, Annina?

Answer: Marzelline

In this comic opera by Richard Strauss, Count Octavian starts as a lover to a princess called the Marschallin, who's not to be confused with Marzelline, the daughter of Rocco the jailer in Beethoven's "Fidelio". He later falls in love with Sophie, who is engaged against her will to the boorish Baron Ochs. Annina is a minor character who helps Sophie break her engagement.
4. Among Eboli, Nerone, Ottone, and Drusilla, which isn't a role in "L'incoronazione di Poppea"?

Answer: Eboli

In Monteverdi's work, Poppea is raised to the position of Empress of the Roman Empire by Nerone while Ottavia is cast down. Ottone is Poppea's former lover, and Drusilla is Ottone's new lover. Eboli can be found in a Verdi opera, "Don Carlo".
5. One of these characters doesn't belong in Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra": Jacopo, Aspicia, Paolo, Maria. Which one?

Answer: Aspicia

Simon Boccanegra adopts Maria as his daughter, when in actuality she is his granddaughter. Jacopo Fiesco disguises himself as Andrea in a plot to overthrow Boccanegra. Paolo is a counselor to Boccanegra. Aspicia is the title character in the ballet "The Pharaoh's Daughter".
6. Siegmund, Sieglinde, Siegrune, Siegfried. Who isn't in Wagner's "Die Walkure"?

Answer: Siegfried

Siegfried is conceived during "Die Walkure" but doesn't appear until the next opera, "Siegfried". The other three are Wotan's children: Siegrune is an immortal Valkyrie, daughter of Erda. Siegmund and Sieglinde, Siegfried's parents, are twins, mortal offspring of Wotan and an unnamed Volsung woman. "Die Walkure" is the second in the cycle "Der Ring des Nibelungen."
7. Isabella, Bertram, Beckmesser, Alice. Who doesn't belong in Meyerbeer's "Robert le Diable"?

Answer: Beckmesser

Robert wants to marry Isabella but is thwarted by his friend Bertram, who's also the devil and Robert's father. Alice is Robert's foster sister and tries to stop him from making a pact with Bertram. Beckmesser belongs in the Wagner opera "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg".
8. Nikiya, Zurga, Leila, Nadir. Who is nowhere to be found in Bizet's "The Pearl Fishers"?

Answer: Nikiya

Nadir and Zurga vow eternal friendship in the famous duet "Au fond du temple saint", but their camaraderie is quickly tested when they discover that they've fallen in love with the same woman, Leila, who herself must remain celibate or risk death by fire. Nikiya is the title character in the ballet "La Bayadere", another story in which two men are in love with the same woman.
9. Who can't call "La Cenerentola" home among these four: Dandini, Tisbe, Sulpice, Magnifico?

Answer: Sulpice

Rossini composed this "Cinderella" opera. Angelina is the Cinderella; Tisbe is one of her stepsisters and Magnifico is her stepfather. Dandini is a valet posing as a prince (at the prince's orders) so the real prince, Ramiro, can observe how women react to him when he's not a prince. Sulpice can be found in "La Fille du Regiment" by Donizetti.
10. Mescalina, Astradamors, Nekrotzar, Amenaide. Who won't you find in Ligeti's bizarre opera "Le Grand Macabre"?

Answer: Amenaide

Nekrotzar has arrived to announce the impending apocalypse. Unfortunately, everyone is too busy partying to care about his mission. Astronomer Astradamors is married to the sex-crazed Mescalina, whose name appears to be a mashup of Messalina, the sexually promiscuous third wife of Emperor Claudius, and Mescaline, a hallucinogenic drug. Both meanings are very suitable to Mescalina's character. Amenaide is in love with Tancredi in Rossini's "Tancredi".
