Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This author suffered the death of his daughter (and her husband) in a drowning accident and the institutionalization of another daughter for madness.

Answer: Victor Hugo

Hugo, famous for "Les Miserables" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame",
enjoyed fame and prominence - but certainly had his share of family misfortunes. The madness of his daughter - involving her unrequited love for another man - became the subject of a movie: "The Story of Adele H".
2. This author apparently didn't allow his marriage to his wife - and his thirteen children with her - to deter him from relationships with other women.

Answer: Leo Tolstoy

The author of what many consider to be the greatest novel ever written may have been serious in his writing, but didn't allow that to prevent him from enjoying himself outside of his marriage.
Kafka also had family problems: see his famous letter to his father.
As for Dostoevski, being lined up in front of a firing squad for execution probably isn't a lot of laughs.
3. This author's wife became insane a few years after their marriage.

Answer: William Thackeray

Author of "Vanity Fair", Thackeray's marriage was still new when the demons struck his wife.
4. This author virtually confined himself voluntarily to a small room where he wrote his masterpiece.

Answer: Marcel Proust

Proust apparently lived inside a small room while working on "Remebrance of Things Past". Nervous fellow.

It makes life so much tougher to be visibly different from most people. Crane didn't have a short height - just a short life.
8. This author died at the tender age of 37 after suffering an attack of rheumatic fever.

Answer: Robert Burns

He lived a "colorful" life, but that type of Errol Flynn lifestyle often catches up with you. Clare struggled with poverty and madness before being institutionalized. Henley struggled with ill health. As for Poe, his may be the original "dramatic life".
9. This author gave up writing novels (in favor of poetry) partly due to the outcry against one of his novels.

10. This author ended his career as a writer of poetry at age 18 or 19, then wandered through Europe and Africa. He had a leg amputated before his early death at age 37.

Answer: Arthur Rimbaud

A short and flamboyant life. he had a turbulent relationship with Verlaine before abandoning poetry. Baudelaire also had a colorful life. DeMusset was (along with Chopin) one of the many lovers of George Sand.
