Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Parable of the Lost Son appears in Luke 15: 11-32 with the first 10 verses of the chapter devoted to two other parables. What are the two parables that appear before the Parable of the Lost Son?

Answer: The Parable of the Lost Sheep and the Parable of the Lost Coin.

The correct answer is the Parable of the Lost Sheep and the Parable of the Lost Coin. With the Parable of the Lost Son appearing in the remaining verses of the chapter, it completes an interesting trilogy on the lost being found. (Incidentally, there is another quiz posted on FunTrivia about the Parable of the Lost Son.

The quiz is by COCPreacher and I highly recommend it. To find the quiz, simply put the word 'prodigal' in the search template. Of course, I made a point of not repeating any questions used by COCPreacher.)
2. In Luke 15: 12, the Lost Son asked his father for a share of the estate. After the father divided the property between them, the son decided to relocate. Where did he move to?

Answer: A distant country.

Scripture simply says the son moved to a distant country. However, no information is given as to what country.
3. After the Lost Son spent everything he had on wild living, a severe famine took place. What did he do to survive?

Answer: Got a job feeding pigs.

Scripture says the Lost Son hired himself out to a man who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. Ending up in such circumstances would be almost unthinkable for a Jew as pigs were seen as unclean and strictly forbidden from the diet. Feeding pigs would be seen as the lowest of the low among jobs, perhaps on the same scale today as that of a toilet bowl cleaner.
4. Complete the three missing words from Luke 15: 17 of the NIV Bible in which the Lost Son is quoted: "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am ______ _____ ______!'"

Answer: starving to death.

The correct answer is starving to death. Verse 16 states "he longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything." The turn around is staggering. The son had gone from the life of a high roller to destitution.
5. In verses 18 and 19, the Lost Son came up with a plan to go back to his father and confess he had sinned against him and heaven. He also decided to make a specific claim. Complete the three missing words from that claim, as found in Luke 15: 19 of the NIV Bible: "I am no longer worthy to be ______ ______ _______; make me like one of your hired men."

Answer: called your son

The correct answer is called your son. In other words, the son was saying he didn't expect to be welcomed back into his father's home, but he would be happy to serve as a hired hand. At least, he would have something to eat and would not have to work at a detestable job such as feeding pigs.
6. Luke 15: 20 states when the Lost Son decided to return home, his father saw him while he was still a long way off. How did the father react?

Answer: He was filled with compassion, ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

He was filled with compassion, ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him, is the correct answer. In other words, there was no hesitation at all by the father to welcome his errant son back into the fold.
7. The father opted to put a ring on his son's finger and sandals on his feet. Then he ordered the fatted calf be killed so everyone could have a feast. According to Scripture, in Luke 15: 24 of the NIV Bible, what was the father's rationale for having a feast?

Answer: "For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found."

"For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found," is the correct answer. In the father's mind, this was the perfect occasion to have a lavish celebration to welcome his son and his new-found life, with no hint of blame.
8. Luke 15: 25 states the older son was in the field and wasn't aware his brother had returned. When he came near the house, what did he hear?

Answer: Music and dancing.

The correct answer is music and dancing. It's apparent a lavish party was taking place without him, and everyone was having fun celebrating the return of the Lost Son.
9. Verses 28-30 in Luke 15 tell of the older brother being upset with the lavish treatment his father was giving to the Lost Son. Why was he angry?

Answer: He had served his father faithfully for years and he wasn't even given a young goat to celebrate with his friends.

He had served his father faithfully for years and he wasn't even given a young goat to celebrate with his friends, is the correct answer. It's apparent the older brother was jealous as he had faithfully served his father, yet the errant son had suddenly become the center of attention.
10. The parable concludes with the father making a statement to the older son, pacifying him. In Luke 15: 31 and 32 of the NIV Bible, what did he say?

Answer: 'My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found."

The correct answer is "My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found." Notes in the NIV Study Bible sum things up this way: "A beautiful picture of the return of the younger son, which also pictures Christian conversion.

The words 'lost and is found' are often used to mean 'perished and saved'." Notes in the NIV Study Bible also suggest the Parable of the Lost Son could be better called the Parable of the Father's Love.
