The Yankees won the AL East, and the Red Sox were the AL Wildcard winners. The Yankees won 101 games and lost 61 throughout the regular season. The Red Sox won 98 games and lost 64. The Red Sox ended up only 3 games behind the Yankees when earlier in the season they had been 10.5 games back.

The Red Sox started off the postseason against the AL West winners, the Angels. The Angels won 92 games during the regular season. While the Red Sox played the Angels, the Yankees beat the Twins also in the AL. In the NL the Astros beat the Braves and the Cardinals beat the Dodgers.
