Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Accra Hearts of Oak S.C.; Ashanti Gold S.C.; Cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs

Answer: Ghana

Teams in the Ghana Premier League (originally the Gold Coast Club Competition until the mid-1950s), the selected options here have all won the league in its history. Accra Hearts of Oak S.C., the oldest of these teams, was formed in 1911 and won the first ever Guggisberg Shield, awarded to the top team in the league every year.

The prize has since been replaced by the Ghanaian FA Cup and the Ghana Super Cup. Ghana is a major nation for African football; they reached the FIFA quarter-finals in 2010, losing to Uruguay in the penalty kicks.
2. ASC Jeanne d'Arc; ASC Jaraaf; Union Sportive Gorée

Answer: Senegal

La Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), based in Dakar, was created in 1960 after French footballers brought the sport to the country and brought it to popularity as a pastime. It grew to be a massive sport for the West African nation and their national team would go on to be the second-ever African nation (after Cameroon) to reach the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals (which they did in 2002).

The Senegal Premier League consists of sixteen teams, three of which have been included in it over its existence. ASC Jeanne d'Arc is actually older than the FSF, being founded in 1923.
3. ASEC Mimosas; Séwé FC; Africa Sports d'Abidjan

Answer: Ivory Coast

Overseen by La Fédération Ivoirienne de Football, the Ivory Coast has made its appearance on the world stage in a number of football ventures ranging from its games played for the African Cup of Nations (which it won in 1992 and 2015), the FIFA World Cup (which it qualified for in 2006), and the Olympic Games in 2008.

Their top division, Ligue 1, contains high-ranking teams dating back to the 1930s and 1940s, fourteen of which operate at the highest level competing for the Coupe de Côte d'Ivoire.
4. AS FAR; Wydad AC; Moghreb Tétouan

Answer: Morocco

Morocco is a noteworthy country for football in Africa. Nationally, their league system is topped off by the Botola Pro, a sixteen team grouping that sees the best amateur leagues, some of which are listed in the question, battle for the Moroccan Throne Cup. On the national stage, Morocco made the news during the 2013 FIFA Club World Club in Morocco when one of their teams, Raja Casablanca, faced off against Germany's FC Bayern Munich in the final match (Morocco lost 2-0).
5. Gor Mahia; Mathare United F.C.; Tusker F.C.

Answer: Kenya

Football holds a special place in Kenya as its top sport and its best players compete in the Kenyan Premier League aiming to win the FKF Cup, the Super Cup, and the Top 8 Cup year over year. Historically, this top echelon has featured eighteen clubs; the next tier down, the Kenyan National Super League, contains twenty additional teams. Gor Mahia F.C. is probably the most celebrated in the country, having been a top contender for all national titles since their founding in 1968.

They won the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1987.
6. African Stars F.C.; Black Africa S.C.; United Africa Tigers

Answer: Namibia

Though Namibia generally isn't a top contender in international football, the Namibia FA Cup has been fought for by teams from around this sparsely-populated nation, especially those in the larger cities (like Windhoek and Walvis Bay). All three teams in this question have been based in the nation's capital, Windhoek, and all have won the title several times over.

The Namibia Premier League is younger than most other African countries' top leagues having been founded in 1990. This being said, the NPL folded in 2020 and was replaced by the Namibia Premier Football League (NPFL).
7. Al-Ittihad Club; Al Ahli SC; Al-Madina SC

Answer: Libya

Originally, Libya's football league system divided the country into three sections based on their locations (east, west, and south) but these combined after World War II and the nation held their first championship in with the Libyan Premier League in 1963.

They have since instituted a number of trophy tournaments. There are two dozen teams in the league in any given year though in its first five decades, only ten ever won the league championship; sixteen of those were Al-Ittihad.
8. UD Songo; CD Costa do Sol; CD Maxaquene

Answer: Mozambique

Mozambique's history with the sport is tied to its own national history as a Portuguese colony, and it's unsurprising that many of the top Mozambican players have played for Portugal in the past. In Mozambique proper, however, the top fourteen teams from around the country play in a league known as the Moçambola.

This league, formed before the nation's independence in 1975, has clubs in it that date all the way back to the 1920s (like CD Maxaquene). Most are based in the nation's capital, Maputo.
9. Djoliba AC; Yeelen Olympique; AS Korofina

Answer: Mali

Introduced by the French, football became a massive sport for the nation of Mali as far back as when it was considered associated with French Sudan. It's unsurprising, thus, that Mali is responsible for sending a number of highly capable players to French clubs back in Europe. Nonetheless, Malian football is overseen by the Malian Football Federation and their Première Division has, historically, had enough teams to split into two equal-sized pools. Nonetheless, the cups are generally won by Mali's top teams, Stade Malien and Djoliba AC, both of whom have won the championship more than twenty times.
10. Savanne SC; FC Dodo; Pamplemousses SC

Answer: Mauritius

The island nation of Mauritius, while remote and small, still participates in the sport in a big way having established the Mauritian Premier League in 1935 and pushed clubs to compete for the Mauritian Cup, an honour that was won by FC Dodo four times. FC Dodo would also lead the league thirteen years before their dissolution.

Despite a significant local scene in football, Mauritius has long been supportive of the English Premier League, an unsurprising thing to note because the British ruled the nation until the 1960s.
