Answer: 1954

Prior to 1954 the 2 semi-finals at the end of the regular season were: 1st v 3rd and 2nd v 4th. The winners of these two semis played in the Final, and the winner was the year's premiers, as long as the Minor Premiers (the team finishing 1st) were playing.

When the minor premiers lost their semi, they nonetheless retained the right to play the winner of the Final in a play-off (the Grand Final). Under this system of determining the title, a Grand Final was only required 5 times: 1930-31 and 1942-43-44.

There were no end of year play-offs from 1912 to 1925, or in 1937, when the title was awarded on a simple first-past-the-post basis to the Minor Premiers. From 1954 onwards the 2 semi-finals became 1st v 2nd (Major Semi-Final) and 3rd v 4th (Minor Semi-Final).

The winner of the Major Semi progressed straight through to the Grand Final, and the Final was played between the loser of the Major Semi and the winner of the Minor Semi ... and that's how a Grand Final became mandatory, in 1954!
