Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many seconds may each player hold the ball for?

Answer: 3

Minis players may hold it for 6 seconds, but once you get up to competition level, you may only hold it for 3 seconds.
2. What colour are netball umpires always supposed to wear?

Answer: white

In some areas, they will let you wear your club uniform, if say you also play for the club as well as the umpire, but at high levels, umpires must wear all white.
3. You may not pick your landing foot off the ground while holding the ball.

Answer: False

You may land, pivot etc. then you may put your other foot on the ground, lift your landing foot up, but you may not place your landing foot back on the ground. You also cannot hop or move around on your other foot, you must balance until leting go of the ball. You may not drag or slide either.
4. Are you allowed to kick the ball?

Answer: No

When a player kickes the ball, a penalty is awarded to the other team.
5. How many times may a team call time during a match?

Answer: unlimited

Unlike basketball, netball does not necessarily have 'plays' that each team follows, and time is called after each play has been done. Time is only called for an injury, but while one team is fussing over a hurt player, the other team may briefly discuss tactics if they like. This makes netball not as much of a slow game as basketball, and some other sports that can be.
6. In a game of netball which of the three following describe how the game is broken up into (time wise): Quarters, Halves, or Thirds?

Answer: quarters

Netball has four quarters with breaks in between. The half time break is usually slightly longer than the quarter/three quarter time breaks, but not in all cases.
7. When one player touches another player, it is called a foul.

Answer: False

It is called 'contact', and a penalty pass or shot is awarded.
8. How far must a player be from another player, while defending the ball?

Answer: 3 feet

It is called 'obstruction'. When this rule is broken, a penalty pass or shot is awarded. Even in countries that use the metric system (metres etc.) people still stay three feet.
9. In each set of two, which set has NEITHER of the two positions that are allowed to shoot for goals?

Answer: Goal Keeper, Goal Defence

GA=Goal Attack, GS=Goal Shooter, GK=Goal Keeper and GD=Goal Defence. GD and GK are allowed inside the circle, and defend the two shooters.
10. What is done when two players from opposite teams catch the ball at exactly the same time?

Answer: toss up

A toss up is usually done, unless the umpire can see that one persons hands are over the other persons, which would suggest the person's hands whose are covered, was the first person to catch the ball, or they know for a fact that one person had the ball before the other.
11. When the ball bouces off the goal post (not the ring part) it is called out.

Answer: False

Unless it hits the pole and goes out, it would hit the pole and then remain in play.
12. What position is the only position allowed in the centre third before a centre pass?

Answer: Centre

All other players must be behind the transverse line. Goal shooters and keepers do not necessarily have to be in the goal circle.
13. Which line is the goal post on?

Answer: base line

The base line is at the end of both sides.
14. If you bounce the ball by accident, or reach out, hit it, and it hits the ground, you catch again it is overlooked and not called replay.

Answer: True

It is only pulled up if there is evidence that the player bounced the ball intensionally. If a player goes to catch the ball or reaches out and unintentionally drops it, it bounces, and then the player catches it again, then it is not pulled up as replay.
15. Boys can play netball.

Answer: True

There are actually some male competitions, and most areas/regions allow boys to play, with the girls up to about age 10 or 11, on average. Although some do not let men play at all.
