A magnificent strike from Lahm saw the full back collect the ball out wide on the left flank, cut inside the Costa Rican defence and fire a stunning shot in from around 25 yards into the far right hand top corner.

The game came to real life shortly afterwards when Paulo Wanchope equalised for the Costa Ricans. However, this leveller was short lived as Miroslav Klose nailed two goals either side of half time to give the Germans a comfortable 3-1 lead. Wanchope however, reduced the lead to 3-2 with a well taken goal and the clock giving a little over 15 minutes left. The Germans were taken back by the Costa Rican effort, but with three minutes remaining a sensational strike by Torsten Frings gave the host nation the perfect start to their campaign and a fine 4-2 win. The English media hyped this one up for a fine win and that the Wayne Rooney foot saga would be ended. However, in reality the game was a poor one for England, and they could count themselves fortunate that Paraguay were not a lot better.

The only goal came after three minutes when England captain David Beckham whipped in a superb cross from a free kick for his Paraguayan counterpart to head past his keeper Justo Villar.

An exciting game with plenty of football being played by both sides of high quality. Korea tended to play at a pace that was akin to running the 100 metres whilst the African side tried in vain to slow the tempo.

Togo took the lead after 31 minutes with an excellent strike from Mohamed Kader and looked like they would escape with three precious points, before two sublime goals by the Koreans broke African hearts.
Lee Chun Soo 54 and Ahn Jung Hwan 72 were the heroes and South Korea sent their amazing fans home with huge smiles on their faces.

The Spaniards destroyed the Ukraine with a breath taking 4-0 smashing. Two first half goals by Alonso (13th min.) and Villa (17th) saw a performance of high quality. The Ukrainians could not keep pace with one of the tournament favourites, and this continued into the second half. Villa (48th) converted the first penalty awarded in the competition with Torres scoring with 10 minutes to go.

The other game in the group had a cracking 2-2 tie with Zied Jaziri firing a 23rd minute opener in for Tunisia. However, the Arabians soon took a 2-1 lead thanks to goals from Al Kahtani Yasser (57th)and Al Jaber Sami (84th) before a stoppage time goal from Bolton Wanderers defender Radhi Jaidi made it honours even.

This game was played in Leipzig on June 14th 2006. Final score: Spain 4, Ukraine 0; and the other game was played in Munich on June 14th 2006. Final score : Saudi Arabia 2, Tunisia 2.
