2006 Germany Trivia Questions

1. The opening game saw the host nation Germany take on Costa Rica in a six goal thriller. Which German player had the honour of scoring the first goal of the tournament?

From Quiz
Opening Group Matches

Answer: Philipp Lahm

A magnificent strike from Lahm saw the full back collect the ball out wide on the left flank, cut inside the Costa Rican defence and fire a stunning shot in from around 25 yards into the far right hand top corner. The game came to real life shortly afterwards when Paulo Wanchope equalised for the Costa Ricans. However, this leveller was short lived as Miroslav Klose nailed two goals either side of half time to give the Germans a comfortable 3-1 lead. Wanchope however, reduced the lead to 3-2 with a well taken goal and the clock giving a little over 15 minutes left. The Germans were taken back by the Costa Rican effort, but with three minutes remaining a sensational strike by Torsten Frings gave the host nation the perfect start to their campaign and a fine 4-2 win. This game was played in Munich on June 9th 2006. Final score Germany 4 Costa Rica 2.

2. The first European team that qualified was also the very first team to qualify from all the continental zones, and was the only team that didn't need to play any qualifying matches. Which country won the right to host the 2006 World Cup?

From Quiz Qualified European Teams

Answer: Germany

Coached by Jurgen Klinsmann during the tournament. Traditionally the host nation is automatically qualified for the final tournament. In all the previous world cups the reigning champion were also automatically qualified. For the 2006 World Cup, however, the defending champions (Brazil) had to qualify from their continental zone for the first time.

3. Which country qualified from UEFA Group 1 as group winner with a record 32 points and without losing a single game?

From Quiz Qualified European Teams

Answer: Netherlands

This was a big relief for the Dutch supporters as they missed out on the previous world cup in 2002. They reached the semi-final in 1998 and lost two finals in 1974 and 1978. Coached by famous former AC Milan striker Marco Van Basten during the tournament.

4. England and Paraguay opened their World Cup campaign in the searing heat of Frankfurt. Engalnd won the game by an own goal. Which unfortunate Paraguayan defender headed a David Beckham free kick into his own net, after just three minutes?

From Quiz Opening Group Matches

Answer: Carlos Gamarra

The English media hyped this one up for a fine win and that the Wayne Rooney foot saga would be ended. However, in reality the game was a poor one for England, and they could count themselves fortunate that Paraguay were not a lot better. The only goal came after three minutes when England captain David Beckham whipped in a superb cross from a free kick for his Paraguayan counterpart to head past his keeper Justo Villar. This game was played in Frankfurt on June 10th 2006. Final score England 1 Paraguay 0

5. The Dutch took on Serbia & Montenegro in the stifling heat of Leipzig. But the only goal of the game came early in the first half when Arjen Robben latched onto a through ball from ______ , to smash into the net?

From Quiz Opening Group Matches

Answer: Robin Van Persie

The brilliant Dutch supporters were the main attraction with their loud songs and orange shirts worn by all. The Dutch players controlled the game from the kick-off and the Serbian and Montenegrins really did not get a look in. Arjen Robben of Chelsea slotted the only goal of the game in the 18th minute after Arsenal's Van Persie passed a deft delivery through. This game was played in Leipzig on June 11th 2006. Final score : Holland 1, Serbia & Montenegro 0.

6. Portugal eased trough UEFA Group 3 without losing a game, accumulating 30 points in the progress. Which Portuguese striker scored 11 goals in the preliminaries, making him the top scorer for the European zone?

From Quiz Qualified European Teams

7. Switzerland qualified for the World Cup Finals by beating Turkey in the play-offs. Who coached Switzerland to second place in UEFA Group 4 and eventually into Germany?

From Quiz Qualified European Teams

Answer: Koebi Kuhn

8. A goal on the stroke of half time was enough for World Champions Brazil to beat European outfit Croatia 1-0. Which Brazilian scored a sublime long range curler to send the "samba boys" wild?

From Quiz Opening Group Matches

Answer: Kaka

The young Brazilian striker scored from around 25yds, bending a vicious curler around the flailing hand of Stipe Pletikosa. Throughout the game the Croatians caused the number one side in the world a number of problems and they could have felt aggrieved as to not of at least gained a draw. This game was played in Berlin on June 13th 2006. Final score : Brazil 1, Croatia 0.

9. Norway finished second in UEFA Group 5 with 18 points; earning them a place in the play-offs. Which country, nicknamed "The Tartan Army", ended up third behind Norway, missing out on the finals once again?

From Quiz Qualified European Teams

Answer: Scotland

10. UEFA Group 7 was of great interest to me as my home country was drawn into this difficult group. Unfortunately, Belgium failed to qualify for the first time since 1982. Which team won this group with 22 points and secured their place in Germany?

From Quiz Qualified European Teams

Answer: Serbia and Montenegro

Surprisingly Serbia and Montenegro won Group 7, forcing Spain into the play-offs. Spain did win their play-off against Slovakia and qualified as well.

11. Who coached Spain into second place in UEFA Group 7 with 20 points, and eventually into the World Cup after winning in the play-offs?

From Quiz Qualified European Teams

Answer: Luis Aragones

At the time, Spain was considered the best European football nation that hasn't won the World Cup. They usually qualify with ease but tend to fail on the big stages. They only made it to the last 4 on one occasion, back in 1950. [ Spain shed this reputation with its World Cup win in 2010 ]
