Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which NBA franchise was originally named the Buffalo Braves?

Answer: Los Angeles Clippers

The Braves joined the NBA in 1970, before moving to Southern California in 1978 to become the San Diego Clippers, and finally the Los Angeles Clippers in 1984. The Kings were originally the Rochester Royals. Before moving to Detroit, the Pistons played in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Timberwolves joined the NBA in 1989 as an expansion team.
2. In 1954, the St Louis Browns of baseball's American League moved to become what team?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

After decades spent in the shadow of their much more successful crosstown rivals from the National League(the Cardinals), the Browns moved east to Baltimore.
3. Which of these NBA teams is NOT a relocated franchise?

Answer: Phoenix Suns

The Suns were a 1968 expansion team. The Hornets originally played in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Rockets moved from San Diego to Houston in 1971. The Hawks have relocated a number of times in their history, moving to Atlanta from St Louis in 1968.
4. The Calgary Flames of the NHL previously played for eight seasons in which American city?

Answer: Atlanta

The Atlanta Flames were founded in 1972, before moving north of the border in 1980. Almost two decades later, the expansion Atlanta Thrashers took their place, only to eventually follow the Flames to Canada, becoming the second incarnation of the Winnipeg Jets in 2011.
5. Which football team moved from Dallas in 1963?

Answer: Kansas City Chiefs

The Dallas Texans (not to be confused with the Houston Texans) were a founding member of the American Football League in 1960, before moving three years later to Kansas City. The Titans relocated from Houston in 1997, where they had been known as the Oilers (also an original AFL team). The Vikings were a 1961 expansion team. The Cardinals moved to Arizona from St Louis in 1988.
6. The Utah Jazz of the NBA moved to Salt Lake City in 1979 from which city?

Answer: New Orleans

After only five years in New Orleans, the Jazz packed up and headed west, creating one of the more curious team names in professional sports - Utah not being an area associated with jazz music.
7. Which of these teams existed for more than two seasons?

Answer: Vancouver Grizzlies

The Vancouver Grizzlies were an NBA expansion team that began play in 1995, before moving to Memphis after six seasons. The Chargers played their first and only season in Los Angeles in 1960, before moving to San Diego. The expansion Pilots played one season in Seattle, before becoming the Milwaukee Brewers in 1970.

The Kansas City Scouts played in the NHL from 1974-76, then became the Colorado Rockies for six seasons before moving to New Jersey to become the Devils.
8. The California Seals/Oakland Seals/California Golden Seals of the NHL relocated to become what team?

Answer: Cleveland Barons

The Barons would survive for only two seasons before they were merged with the Minnesota North Stars in 1978.
9. After leaving their original home city of Philadelphia, but before arriving in Oakland, which city did the Athletics of the American League call home for 13 seasons?

Answer: Kansas City

Milwaukee also hosted an MLB team for 13 seasons during the same era as the Kansas City Athletics. The Athletics played in Kansas City from 1955-67, and the Braves played in Milwaukee from 1953-65.
10. Which NFL franchise originally called Boston home?

Answer: Washington Redskins

Originally taking the same name as the city's National League baseball team, the Boston Braves renamed themselves the Boston Redskins before moving to Washington, DC in 1937. The Lions franchise was originally located in Portsmouth, Ohio. The Bears began play as the Decatur Staleys. The Falcons have played in Atlanta since the team was founded in 1965.
