Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Super Bowl LVI was played to determine the winner of the 2021-22 season. Which multi-billion dollar stadium, newly opened just two years prior, was the game held at?

Answer: SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles

SoFi Stadium cost nearly $5 billion (USD) to build, and was slated to open in 2017 and then host Super Bowl LV (2021). However, due to delays, the stadium didn't open until 2020 and the Super Bowl was delayed by a year to 2022. This would be the first time in nearly twenty years that the Super Bowl would be played in the United States' biggest media market, Los Angeles.

This would be the second year in a row where there was a team from the host city playing in the game, and the second time (also in a row) that a team won the Super Bowl on home turf.
2. The coin toss has become an integral part of the game. The Rams, the 'visiting' team, called "tails", and lost. Which tennis star and advocate for gender equality in sports tossed the coin?

Answer: Billie Jean King

The coin used in the coin toss was a uniquely minted coin with the Super Bowl LVI logo as the heads side and the AFC and NFC championship team logos as tails. The captain for the Rams, Matt Stafford, called tails. Billie Jean King was given the coin to toss and it came up heads. The Bengals, the coin-flip winning team, chose to defer their call to the Rams who opted to receive the ball. The Bengals chose the direction they wanted to kick.

Interestingly, in the seven previous Super Bowls, the team that won the coin toss lost the game. Super Bowl LVI made it eight in a row.
3. The Rams received the ball on the opening drive and started from their 25-yard line. What was the result of that drive?

Answer: Punt

The Rams led off with a run by Cam Akers who got four yards before being tackled by Sam Hubbard. Then, with no huddle, Stafford got a first down on a seven-yard pass to Akers again. On first-and-10, Akers got the ball for a third time but was stopped just at the line of scrimmage. On second down, Stafford was taken down for the game's first sack by Trey Hendrickson and a loss of seven yards. On third-and-thirteen, Stafford gave the ball to Darrell Henderson, the other Rams' running back, and he was stuffed behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of three. Johnny Hekker then punted the ball away.
4. On the Bengals' opening drive, they started from their 42-yard line. What was the result of that drive?

Answer: Turnover

The Bengals' first play from scrimmage was a pass from quarterback Joe Burrow to Tyler Boyd who got eight yards on the play. Burrow then, on second-and-2, handed the ball off to Joe Mixon who only got one yard. On third-and-1, Samaje Perine got the ball but was stopped at the line of scrimmage. Fourth-and-1 just over midfield and Zac Taylor, the head coach for the Bengals, opted to go for it. Burrow threw to Ja'Marr Chase, but ahead of him and the pass was incomplete.

The Bengals committed a turnover on downs and the Rams got the ball back.
5. The Rams scored first, a touchdown thrown by Matt Stafford. Which Ram, playing in his first Super Bowl, caught the game's first touchdown?

Answer: Odell Beckham Jr.

Third-and-3 at the Cincinnati 17-yard line. Stafford in the shotgun, drops back, throws, and right into the hands of #3, Odell Beckham Jr. in the back left corner of the end zone. The throw had to be perfect, as OBJ was being covered closely by Bengals cornerback Mike Hilton. He celebrated his first touchdown by doing a moonwalk. The extra point by Matt Gay was good and the Rams were off to a 7-0 lead.

Unfortunately, Beckham would later leave the game with a non-contact knee injury and would not return to play (though he was cheering loudly from the sidelines). The day after the Super Bowl, it was disclosed that he had re-torn his ACL.
6. When the first half was over, the score was close. Which team was up at halftime in Super Bowl LVI?

Answer: Rams

After the Rams scored the opening touchdown, the Bengals responded a few drives later with a field goal after a brilliant catch by Ja'Marr Chase for 46 yards. The next drive, the Rams responded by marching downfield and capping the drive with an 11-yard touchdown catch by Cooper Kupp.

The next drive, the Bengals went 75 yards themselves and scored a touchdown on a trick play to Tee Higgins. Despite several opportunities, the score at halftime was 13-10 in favour of the Rams.
7. You can't have a Super Bowl without a halftime show. Which genre of music featured for the first time at Super Bowl LVI's halftime show?

Answer: Rap/Hip Hop

The Super Bowl LVI halftime show was headlined by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar. It also had appearances by 50 Cent and Anderson .Paak, as well as Sean Forbes and Warren "WAWA" Snipe, two deaf rappers who were the first to provide ASL interpretations at any Super Bowl halftime show. Mary J. Blige was the only artist who had previously performed at a halftime show in the Super Bowl, and this was the first time that rap/hip hop was the featured genre of music.

The show was very highly praised and very enjoyable, especially for the Millennial and GenX crowd. The setlist consisted of some songs that were considered rap classics. The viewership for the halftime show was actually slightly higher than the viewership for the game itself was highlighting how successful the lineup was.
8. The second half started with a blast. On the first play from scrimmage, Joe Burrow threw a pass that went all 75 yards for the lead-changing touchdown. Who was the receiver?

Answer: Tee Higgins

On the first play of the second half, Joe Burrow lined up behind center and dropped back after the snap. Seeing that the pocket was collapsing, he began to scramble to his right while still looking upfield. Seeing Tee Higgins one-on-one with Jalen Ramsey, he launched the ball in his direction. After some contact between Ramsey and Higgins, Ramsey lost his feet and Higgins was able to make the catch and run uncontested all the way for the touchdown.

In the replay, it showed Ramsey being thrown to the ground by Higgins who had grabbed Ramsey's facemask. The officials missed the call on the play and the touchdown stood, giving the Bengals the lead.
9. The Cincinnati Bengals had a four-point lead when the Rams got the ball on their 21-yard line with just over 6 minutes left to play. Matt Stafford marched the Rams down and got the game-winning touchdown. Who did he throw the ball to?

Answer: Cooper Kupp

The Cincinnati Bengals' lead was cut down to four points with 5:58 left in the 3rd quarter by an LA field goal. The two teams exchanged seven(!) consecutive punts before the Rams got the ball on their 21-yard line with just over 6 minutes left to play. Matt Stafford looked calm as he marched the Rams closer and closer to the end zone.

Once the Rams got close, that's when the game took a strange turn. During the entire game up to that point, both teams had gotten a total of two penalties each. However, in the last drive, there were flags galore, and this really changed the pace of the game and gave the Rams an advantage. A penalty turned an incomplete pass on third-and-goal to another first-and goal. A pass-interference call in the end zone gave the Rams yet another first-and-goal from the 1-yard line, and, on the seventh "-and goal" play, Matt Stafford connected with Cooper Kupp for what would be the game-winning touchdown.
10. The Los Angeles Rams won Super Bowl LVI by the score of 23-20. Who was chosen as the game MVP?

Answer: Cooper Kupp

Cooper Kupp was selected as the game MVP for his performance during the game, and especially on the game-winning drive. He finished the game with 8 receptions for 92 yards, including two touchdowns. He also had one carry for seven yards putting him one yard shy of 100 yards of offence. Having won the receiving triple crown in the regular season (catches, yards, and touchdowns), it was only fitting that Kupp would win the MVP in the biggest game of his career.
