The CBA that had expired started in the 1994-95 season, and was effective for 10 years. It expired at midnight EDT on September 16, 2004.

Gary Bettman became commissioner of the NHL in 1993, one year before the CBA took effect.

Answer: Trevor Linden

Trevor Linden was a player in 2004, and decided to try to get a settlement without Bettman or Goodenow. Those two days of talks never panned out to an agreement. Goodenow was the executive director of the NHLPA. Lemieux and Gretzky were player/owners.

The NHL and NHLPA met on September 9, 2004, one week before the lockout was imposed. They would not meet again until December 2, 2004.
