Originally the 1940 Summer Games were to be held in Tokyo. In 1938, Tokyo was stripped of its host status due to the outbreak of the second Sino-Japanese War. The Games were then given to the runner up for the bidding for the 1940 Summer Games, Helsinki. The date was set for July 20 to August 4, 1940. Again, the Games would be cancelled due to World War II.

The 13 countries were Ghana, China, the USSR, Vietnam, Israel, Thailand, Saar, Indonesia, Guatemala, Nigeria, The Bahamas, Hong Kong, and the Netherlands Antilles. The USSR won the most medals at the 1952 Summer Games with a total of 71 medals.

Another Japanese wrestler, Yushu Kitano, won silver in freestyle flyweight. Those were the only medals that Japan won in wrestling at the 1952 Summer Games.
