Answer: Subspace amplifiers

Two subspace amplifiers - Echo 1 and Echo 2 - are launched, which will allow the Enterprise to extend the range of their subspace communication to Earth. Immediately following the launch of Echo 2 and the confirmation that the two amplifiers are in communication with each other, the alien vessel drops out of warp and holds at a distance of 12 kilometers. Sub-Commander T'Pol - usually knowledgeable about the different species that have already been encountered by the Vulcans - does not recognize the ship configuration.

Sub-Commander T'Pol was played by Jolene Blalock.

Answer: Nothing

Lieutenant Reed is unable to learn anything from his attempts to scan the alien vessel. At this point, while a somewhat puzzling and fruitless encounter, nobody has any concerns about the aliens. Sub-Commander T'Pol mentions that the motives of different alien species can sometimes be difficult to comprehend.

Scott Bakula played the part of Captain Jonathan Archer, while the role of Lieutenant Malcolm Reed was played by Dominic Keating.

Answer: Lieutenant Reed

The unenviable job of trying to find out Lt. Reed's favourite food falls to Ensign Hoshi Sato, even though she tries to beg off. With the calibration of the subspace amplifiers complete, she connects Capt. Archer with Reed's parents on Earth.

The conversation ended up to be fruitless, as Reed's parents couldn't say what his favourite food was... his mom said that he always just ate whatever they put in front of him.

Thus, more work ahead for Hoshi.

Ensign Hoshi Sato was played by Linda Park.

Answer: False

Captain Archer once again attempts to establish communications with the aliens, but again they do not answer. At least not in words. As Archer ends his transmission, the alien vessel hits them with an invasive scan that causes pain to the Enterprise crew. Then, as the ship starts to depart it fires a couple of energy weapon blasts, giving minor damage but no casualties.

Lt. Reed reports that when the aliens dropped their shielding and fired on the Enterprise, he was able to get some scan results - enough to determine that there were at least 15 alien biosigns, but maybe more.

Commander Charles "Trip" Tucker III was played by Connor Trinneer.

Answer: Three

With the alien threat and without the greater firepower capability that the phase cannons would provide, Captain Archer decides to turn around and head back towards Sol system and the shipyards at Jupiter Station. Trip and Lt. Reed both try to talk the Captain out of his decision, stating that they could install the one prototype phase cannon in storage, and cobble together two more from other components in the hold.

Despite their assurances, the Captain maintains his decision to return home, but does allow them to begin the process.

Answer: Two

In addition to the loss of warp capability, the alien attack also causes the ship to lose main power and tactical systems. With the Enterprise in a vulnerable state, it is easy enough for the aliens to gain access to the ship, which they do through Launch Bay Two.

Two unnamed crewmen are near the point of incursion, and they are quickly overwhelmed by the two alien attackers. Captain Archer arrives with a response team, but when they fire at the aliens (who are scanning the two unconscious men), they turn out to have personal shielding.

Answer: Two days

With the Enterprise a sitting duck, Captain Archer decides to swallow his pride and contact the Vulcan High Command for assistance. At this point they discover that the subspace amplifiers have been destroyed by the aliens, and they no longer have long range subspace communication.

Answer: A small moon

After arguing about it, Trip and Malcolm agree to attempt a tie-in of the impulse engines into the phase cannons. When they test the weapon, it overloads the phase modulators and is ten times more powerful than they expected.

Captain Archer asks Lt. Reed to "shave a little off the top" of a mountain peak on the moon (later described as the size of Mount McKinley). Instead, the phase cannon obliterates the whole target.

Realizing the danger of the impulse engine tie-in, they return the cannons to their original configuration.

Answer: "You are defenseless. Prepare to surrender your vessel."

The alien message is actually a mock-up of video images of Captain Archer speaking, but the message is nonetheless quite clear.

The Enterprise fires the phase cannons at the alien ship, but they have little effect. Archer suggests that they deliberately overload the phase modulators again, even though it will mean that the cannons will only fire once and may cause lots of damage to the Enterprise in the process.

The decision proves to be the right one, as the enemy vessel's shields fail and a followup torpedo hit sends the aliens running.

With the successful battle, Captain Archer also decides that a trip back to Jupiter Station is no longer required. He orders a grateful Ensign Mayweather to turn the ship around and continue on their original heading.

Anthony Montgomery played the role of Ensign Travis Mayweather.

Answer: Pineapple

It finally took a discussion with Dr. Phlox to find out what Malcolm's favourite food was, and even then Hoshi wasn't sure until he actually received the cake at the end of the episode and declared that pineapple was, indeed, his favourite.

Dr. Phlox made note that Lt. Reed's medical file shows that he has an allergy against a plant enzyme called bromelain, which is found in pineapple. Oddly, though, Malcolm has been taking regular injections so that he can tolerate the enzyme.
