Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did Maddie do when Jonathan told her how Beryl Carney died?

Answer: she stopped the car and pranced around in the snow in anguish

It was hardly surprising that Maddie reacted badly to the story of Beryl Carney's death. She and her twin sister, Marella, were practicing a magic trick which went wrong and Beryl was sawn in half by a sawblade. Lengthwise. *shudder*
2. When in the Mother Redcap, Maddie was very nearly killed because of something she had done. What was this?

Answer: she took off her shoes

There was a booby trap in the room, where a previous landlord had rigged up the electric current to tiny little spikes under the floorboards. Maddie had taken her shoes off while Jonathan discovered the apparatus, and it was live when she went to stand on them barefoot. Jonathan leapt towards her and saved her life.
3. Throughout the episode 'Ghosts Forge' Maddie is driven mad by a jazz band practicing in the street outside her flat. At the end of the episode she is prepared for them, and when they start playing she turns a hose on the musicians. Unfortunately they are no longer practicing. What are they doing?

Answer: accompanying a funeral

When she realised what she had done, she responded limply, "I'll get a cloth."
4. Our intrepid reporter was not above telling the odd porky. After Jonathan told her who had done the deed, she would slip a lie into the conversation in order to trap the bad guy. To whom did she say that skin cells had been taken from Jonathan's shoulders and implicated the murderer?

Answer: Clare, the murder victim's friend in 'The Problem at Gallows Gate'

Maddy says there is one thing she doesn't understand and when Clare asked what that was, she said "Why you swallowed all that rubbish I gave you about skin cells in Jonathan's shoulders - still, I suppose it broke the ice."

A lovely quote which touches on this 'economy with the truth' comes in 'The Omega Man', when Maddie is worried that she might be injected with a truth serum. Jonathan does not bat an eyelid, but responds dryly, "It wouldn't stand a chance."
5. On many occasions Maddie misread Jonathan completely, and none more so than the occasion (in 'The Omega Man') when she shunned him because she saw him as mercenary after he demanded $100,000 from the Americans for the solution to a mystery. She was to discover the reason behind the payment, however, and realised her mistake. What was the money for?

Answer: an animal shelter which had been forced to close

Maddie was looking after a couple of kittens in her flat, where no pets were allowed, because the animal shelter was being forced out of its home because the lease was up for renewal. The last scene showed Maddie finding a cheque from Jonathan to the shelter for £65,000 - exactly the amount of money she said was needed at the beginning of the episode.
6. In 'The Scented Room' Jonathan learns a little more about Maddie's past; she had grown up in a single parent household (which would not have been as acceptable as it is now) and after her mother went though a court case over the shoplifting of a packet of bacon she committed suicide. How old had Maddie been at that time?

Answer: 17

Jonathan found this out when he went looking for her in order to wrap up the mystery of the missing painting. He had seen a diary entry which read 'Gordon Hill coming down' and assumed it was a person - but it was an address. He found Maddie at the demolition site.
7. There could have been some justification to Maddie not realising she was being picked up by two different men. They did look similar, and it was a busy, dark place - but what fun when both turned up at her flat the next day for dinner! What was on the menu?

Answer: lobster

The two men seemed to get on very well together, for we see them both later when one of them telephones Maddie. We don't find out what they want to say, as Maddie is acting for Jonathan at the time and is holding a one-sided conversation for his benefit.
8. Maddie moved to the USA after Series 3; she sent Jonathan a picture which we see in the special 'Satan's Chimney'. What was the name of her new American boyfriend?

Answer: Austin

Maddy wrote saying that her book tour was going well. 'Austin is HUGE!' she wrote, and when Jonathan turned the picture over we see it is Maddy being held close to a man; there is an arrow pointing at him with 'Austin' written by it.
9. What was Maddie's answer to Captain Candy when he said, "I think you're just pretending to be stupid, but really you're not stupid at all!"?

Answer: "That is not true! I definitely - "

The cut-off of her sentence was a master stroke of comedy as Maddie realises that she is admitting to being stupid! Poor woman, she was tired and scared, and being brow-beaten by a man in authority on a subject which she knew nothing at all. Luckily Jonathan was on hand to save the day and solve the mystery of 'The Omega Man'.
10. There was one time when Maddie's thought processes clicked into place - this was in 'The Three Gamblers' when she surprised even Jonathan by voicing what conclusion?

Answer: that Karen was a police officer

A chance request from Adam when at the theatre gave Maddie this clue; he had to explain what he meant by a technical term in order for her to pass something over to him. This reminded her of a time in the Inspector's office when Karen was able to pass a SOCO report to the policeman without hesitation. Karen was an undercover copper who had been working on this particular crime syndicate for many months.
