After the collapse of the prison, Daryl helps Beth to survive, though he seems to have given up hope. Beth searches for her first ever drink, and Daryl takes her to a moonshiner's cabin to have it. The pair bonds in a moment of drunken honesty, and together they burn down the moonshiner's cabin.

After spending time with Beth, Daryl's hope in humanity is restored - just in time for Beth to be kidnapped in episode 13, "Alone."

Rick, who has turned his mind to farming, tries to raise pigs, but unfortunately the animals are infected with a mysterious virus. In the absence of modern medicine, the virus spreads quickly and kills many. Karen and David are among the infected, and in episode 2, "Infection," their bodies are found burned. Rick deduces that they must have been killed by someone who knew them.

This happens in season 4, episode 9, "After." Carl and Rick think baby Judith is dead because they found her bloody car carrier. Later, In season 4, episode 11, "Claimed," Rick kills one of the Claimers when he searches their house. They abandon the house they've been living in and begin to follow the signs to Terminus.

Rick tries to negotiate with him and achieve some kind of peace, but instead the Governor decapitates Hershel with Michonne's katana, and soon the prison fences are breached.
