Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who drove Johnny home at the very beginning of the episode?

Answer: Ryan

Ryan Atwood (played by Benjamin McKenzie) was the less-fortunate teenager the Cohen family took in. Ryan Atwood had been with his brother Trey when Trey stole a car, which landed Ryan in jail. Sandy Cohen (played by Peter Gallagher) was Ryan's attorney.

When Ryan got kicked out of his home for landing in juvie, Ryan called Sandy and Sandy took him home. The Cohen family all grew to love and cherish Ryan as their own flesh and blood. In this episode, Ryan drove Johnny (played by Ryan Donowho) home in the Cohen's Range Rover. Seth was in the passenger seat and Marissa was in the back, but Ryan was driving. Johnny couldn't walk home because of his injured knee.
2. What was Kirsten and Julie's first agreed business ploy?

Answer: Party planning

When Kirsten (played by Kelly Rowan) found out Julie (played by Melinda Clarke) was living in a trailer park, she suggested the two of them go into business together. Kirsten and Julie had first decided on party planning because they were already good at it, and they knew all the vendors.

After their first job didn't turn out so well, they brainstormed for more ideas. Julie thought Kirsten was suggesting a high-end call girl service, but Kirsten was actually suggesting a high-end dating service. The two women decided this was a perfect business for Newport.

It turned out to be very successful, and they named their new business "NewMatch."
3. "If you make being poor too comfortable, what's the incentive to get rich?" Which character said this?

Answer: Julie

Kirsten and Julie were sitting at the Cohen's table, discussing business ideas. The topic of low-income housing came up, and Julie scoffed at the idea, and then threw off this memorable quote. Sandy heard her, raised his eyebrows and commented, "Whoa." Julie was living in a trailer park when she said this, which was quite possibly the lowest low-income housing gets. Julie Cooper was obsessed with being rich, and she married Kirsten's father, Caleb Nichol (played by Alan Dale) for money in the first season. Julie was also Marissa (played by Mischa Barton) and Kaitlyn's (played by Willa Holland) mother.
4. What was Summer's SAT score?

Answer: 2300

Summer (played by Rachel Bilson) took her SATs late because she was watching a "Valley" marathon when the tests were originally held. The "Valley" was a TV show Summer loved, and was a parody of "The O.C." itself. When Seth, Summer's boyfriend (played by Adam Brody), found out that Summer had scored a 2300, he was baffled and threatened that she had gotten higher than him.

He then started to compete with Summer, and when Ryan called her a genius, Seth disagreed and took offense. He was supposed to be the smart one in his and Summer's relationship! If Summer was smart too, their balance was offset!
5. In what way(s) was Summer smart?

Answer: In her way AND Cohen's way.

When Summer informed Seth that she was now smart, he replied, "Yes you are; in your own special way!" Summer told him she was smart in his way too, because of her high SAT score. Seth was threatened by Summer's newfound intelligence, and feared that now Summer was better than him at absolutely everything.

She was cute and people liked her, while he was a social outcast with a mumbling problem.
6. Who suggested Ryan should be an intern at The Newport Group?

Answer: Matt Ramsey

Matt Ramsey was a young entrepreneur that Sandy Cohen had hired for "The Newport Group," the company Kirsten Cohen worked at for fifteen years and her father once owned. Matt had graduated from Berkeley College, the same college Sandy had graduated from, which put Matt in Sandy's good books right off the bat. Sandy was currently the CEO of this multi-million dollar company. Matt Ramsey and Sandy Cohen were working on a new development project in the Cohen's living room, when Ryan came over and offered a suggestion. Matt was impressed and asked Ryan what would look better on a resume than an internship at a multi-million dollar company. Sandy okayed the idea, and viola; Ryan was an intern!
7. Who did Johnny confide in that he liked Marissa?

Answer: Summer

Summer Roberts was Marissa Cooper's best friend. Summer was also Seth's girlfriend, and her father got engaged to Julie Cooper (Marissa's mother) in this season. Marissa was over at Johnny's one night, and Summer had come to pick her up. Marissa had stepped outside to take a call, and Johnny had told Summer that he liked Marissa hanging out with him all the time, he liked it a lot.

This was not good, since Marissa was already dating Ryan. Summer called that one like so long ago!
8. What was the name of Kirsten and Julie's first client?

Answer: Jeff Granzow

Jeff Granzow was the attractive man Julie had met at the "Newport Bay Yacht Club." Julie and Kirsten were having a business meeting here one afternoon. Kirsten had run out to get a paper she had forgot in her car, and Jeff smiled at Julie sitting alone at the table.

He came over and introduced himself, interested in getting to know Julie more. Kirsten came back and Julie introduces the two, telling Kirsten they've just been hired. Henry Griffin was someone Sandy Cohen worked with on the hospital project. Taryn Baker was a Newpsie, and Carter Buckley was the editor of Newport Living Magazine.
9. What was the name of the club Matt took Ryan to?

Answer: Bare Elegance

When Matt told Ryan they were going to take a "break" from working, he took Ryan to a strip club called "Bare Elegance" instead. Ryan was on his cell phone telling Marissa he'd be late meeting her when his eyes were drawn to the fluorescent sign above the building Matt had taken him to.

The nightclub "LunaChicks" was in Hollywood; that's where Summer, Marissa, Ryan and Seth went for Grady Bridges' (star of "The Valley") birthday party. The other two options were made up names.
10. Who was in the pool house, and had a good conversation with Ryan at the end of the episode?

Answer: Marissa

Marissa Cooper was Ryan Atwood's girlfriend and Summer Robert's best friend. Marissa decided to surprise Ryan by showing up at the pool house, while Ryan decided to surprise Marissa by showing up in her room. They called each other, only to find out they were both in each other's rooms. Ryan offered to come over, but Marissa declined, and asked him to just talk to her. So the two actually had a good talk, which was a rare occurrence between the two. Ryan confessed that he got a lap dance, and Marissa confessed that she slept over at Johnny's.
