"Whom Gods Destroy" Trivia Quiz

The inmates of Elba II are so dangerous, the asylum is built on a planet with a poisonous atmosphere and there is a force field around the entire planet. Kirk and Spock beam down to bring a new drug and meet Dr. Cory, who runs the asylum. They are not accompanied by a security detail because what could possibly go wrong, right? Dr. Cory tells them they just admitted a fifteenth inmate, Garth of Izar. Garth is a former Fleet Captain. Kirk has a man-crush on Garth and asks to see him.

Answer: Orion, Tellarite and Andorian

Marta, an Orion woman, tells Kirk not to trust Dr. Cory because he is not who he says he is. Hey, it's Batgirl, Yvonne Craig! Better listen to her, Kirk. He doesn't. Dr. Cory soon reveals himself to be Garth, who has learned to shape shift using cellular metamorphosis. Apparently, that extends to his clothing as well, but just go with it.

The real Cory is locked in a cell and Garth releases the other inmates. We have seen Orion, Tellarite and Andorian aliens before. Some other inmates make an appearance later on but they are just a bunch of guys in corny costumes.

Answer: Lord Garth

Garth puts Kirk in the cell with Cory and Spock is taken away. Garth demands Kirk address him as "Lord Garth". He lost his marbles after recovering from an accident and ordered his crew to annihilate the species that saved him. They refused and he was sent to the loony bin.

Answer: Hunt down and punish his former mutinous crew

Garth morphs into Kirk and plans to take the Enterprise to exact revenge on the crew that turned against him. If you buy the fact that Garth can alter his clothes, then you must also accept that he is a master impressionist as well. He heads off to the control room to call the Enterprise.

Answer: "Queen to Queen's level three"

Garth, as Kirk, calls the Enterprise to request beam up. Scotty says "Queen to Queen's level three", which is akin to "Sure thing, just give me the pass code". Garth does not know it and says he is just testing Scotty. So, let's back up a minute. Kirk did not feel the need for a security force but thought a pass code might come in handy. The guy works in mysterious ways!

Answer: A Vulcan nursery school dance

Garth hosts a dinner for Kirk and Spock along with the rest of the crazies. He has Marta do a traditional Orion slave girl dance that we all know is supposed to get men all hot and bothered. When asked what Spock thinks of her dance, he says it is reminiscent of a Vulcan nursery school dance. Burn!

Answer: He asks Spock to give Scotty the countersign

Alone with Kirk, Marta continues trying to seduce him. She claims she wants to help and has arragned for Spock to be released. When Spock shows up, they head off to the control room where Spock drops the force field and suggests Kirk beam up. He wants to stay behind with a security detail. Smelling a rat, Kirk tells Spock to go ahead and give Scotty the high sign. Of course, it turns out to be Garth pretending to be Spock. Better luck next time, Garth.

Answer: Garth blows her to bits

Following a coronation ceremony where Garth crowns himself "Lord Garth", Kirk is forced to watch as Marta is dragged outside into the poisonous atmosphere. Hoping Kirk will give up the pass code before Marta chokes to death, Garth becomes impatient and quickly blows her up instead using an explosive hidden in her necklace. What a guy!

Answer: The real Kirk tells Spock to shoot both Kirks

Spock escapes and heads to the control room where Kirk has just watched Garth murder Marta. Garth sees Spock coming on a monitor and is prepared when he arrives. Spock walks into the control room to find two Kirks. Both Kirks claim to be the real one, but Spock says he's got a lot of time on his hands so he'll wait it out until Garth runs out of energy.

Then, in an epic "Kirk-off", the two Kirks engage in battle. Kirk hasn't fought himself since season one, so he's a little rusty. As fake Kirk tells Spock to shoot the other one, real Kirk says shooting both of them is the only way to save the Enterprise.

Answer: Mr. Spock

Having defeated Garth, Spock calls the Enterprise and has the honor of giving the countersign to Scotty that we have been waiting all episode to hear. Dr. McCoy brings more medicine and Garth is cured, although he doesn't remember any of his lunacy. Now it's time for some classic Kirk/Spock banter. Kirk asks Spock what took him so long to figure out which Kirk was actually Garth. Spock says he was waiting for a victor, which he assumed would be Garth. Oh, snap!
