1. Following the conclusion of Alexander Courage's iconic theme tune, the episode begins with a shot that zooms into activity on the bridge of the Enterprise. Which character delivers "Star Trek"'s first line?

The opening shot of the episode, following the main title sequence, involved the camera alongside the Enterprise as it was on course and at speed, before zooming in close to the main bridge, where the image would transition from the exterior dome to a shot of the interior of the bridge. This shot was incredibly intricate to undertake, and was the very last one produced for the episode before it wrapped completely. Upon the scene transitioning into the bridge, the very first line is delivered by Leonard Nimoy as Mr Spock - "Check the circuit".

Dr. Cory tells them they just admitted a fifteenth inmate, Garth of Izar. Garth is a former Fleet Captain. Kirk has a man-crush on Garth and asks to see him.

A research crew has been stationed on Minara II to observe the planet's star as it approaches supernova. The Enterprise has arrived to evacuate the researchers before the planet becomes uninhabitable. For once, it's not a bogus distress call.

Lt. Commander Scott is commanding the Enterprise after Kirk, Spock, McCoy and some "red shirts" beam down to Scalos to investigate. They find a small group of people who have modeled their society on the teachings of Greek philosopher Plato, calling themselves "Plato's Stepchildren". Their leader, Parmen, has obtained a simple scratch on his leg that has become very infected. Dr. McCoy wonders why a minor injury such as a scratch would turn into a big medical emergency.

The Enterprise travels to an uncharted area of space, which is the last known location of the USS Defiant. There has been no communication with the Defiant in the past three weeks. Sensors are not able to detect the Defiant but they are able to see it drifting. Space is breaking up all around the Enterprise and the warp engines are losing power. Captain Kirk decides to beam over to the Defiant to investigate and he brings Spock, McCoy and Chekov along for the ride. This was probably not a good idea.

Answer: A group of missiles are approaching the Enterprise.

Mr. Spock is in command when it is determined that the Enterprise is the target of a set of missiles hurling through space. Captain Kirk arrives on the bridge and orders the missiles to be destroyed. He's called away to sick bay and leaves the bridge crew to locate the point of origin of the missiles.

Having fallen once again for the old distress call scam, Kirk and crew beam down to the planet surface only to find there is no colony there. Scans of the area show no trace a colony ever existed. To make matters worse, a Klingon ship shows up and a contingent led by Commander Kang beams down to confront Kirk. Things start to get tense real fast.

The Enterprise's mission is to transport Medusan Ambassador Kollos back to his home world. We learn the Medusans are an advanced race of beings that are formless. So utterly hideously is their appearance that even the slightest glimpse of them will drive a human totally insane. Kollos is accompanied by Laurence Marvick who beams aboard ahead of the Ambassador and warns Captain Kirk to vacate the transporter room before the Ambassador's arrival. Mr. Marvick happens to be one of the designers of the Enterprise.

After receiving a distress call from a scientific survey colony on Triacus, Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down to investigate. They find most of the adult colony members to be dead. The last adult, Professor Starnes, is found ranting incoherently and he soon dies. Dr. McCoy discovers they have all killed themselves. They soon find the children of the colony playing nearby. The children are happy and do not seem upset that their parents are dead. Spock's tricorder detects a disturbance in a nearby cave. Uh-oh!

The landing party has beamed down for a brief survey of the area. They are taken in by the beauty and tranquility of the surrounding area. Dr. McCoy smells honeysuckle in the air and Captain Kirk swears he also smells orange blossom. They come across an obelisk-like structure with strange symbols carved in it but they don't have enough time to study it further. They observe a humanoid tribe that resembles Native American Indians. Kirk takes a moment to ponder what it would be like to live a simple life in paradise. Dream on, Captain Kirk!

Most original series "Star Trek" episodes open with Captain Kirk making an entry into the Captain's log. "The Enterprise Incident" episode is one of the few that is an exception to the norm as we hear Dr. McCoy recording an entry into the Chief Medical Officer's log expressing concern regarding the Captain's behavior.

To Security's credit, they arrive, remember their jobs, and pull out their phasers, but the beautiful woman renders the entire ship unconscious before the phasers can ever be used. It's important to note that no security guards were harmed in the course of this episode.

The distress signal that is intercepted by the Enterprise is an old-style radio wave transmission that takes eighteen years to travel from the crash site. However, with no indication in the message of survivors, Pike decides not to investigate, and instead deal with his own crew's wounded first.

With a straight line down the middle, no less.

Dr. Cory soon reveals himself to be Garth, who has learned to shape shift using cellular metamorphosis. Apparently, that extends to his clothing as well, but just go with it. The real Cory is locked in a cell and Garth releases the other inmates. We have seen Orion, Tellarite and Andorian aliens before. Some other inmates make an appearance later on but they are just a bunch of guys in corny costumes.
