Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The episode opens with someone other than Captain Kirk making a ship's log entry about arriving at the planet Scalos in response to receiving a distress call. Who is making that log entry?

Answer: Lt. Commander Scott

Lt. Commander Scott is commanding the Enterprise after Kirk, Spock, McCoy and some "red shirts" beam down to Scalos to investigate. The landing party arrives in a city where the distress call originated from. Lt. Uhura is receiving a visual message of the Scalosians from the exact spot the landing party is standing, but the Scalosians are nowhere to be found. Having been fooled many times before by the old distress call ruse, they should know better. Is there ever a real distress call?
2. Upon beaming down to Scalos, Dr. McCoy can find no life form readings, yet Captain Kirk senses something. Why does Kirk believe there is life on Scalos?

Answer: He hears an insect-like buzzing sound

The city appears to be vacant and McCoy's tricorder shows no signs of vegetation or animal life. Kirk is an old farm boy at heart and relies on his ears to tell him there is certainly insect life about. Did anyone pack a can of bug spray? Seems like an essential item when beaming down to a strange planet, along with a nice broad spectrum sun screen.
3. The landing party on Scalos contains a couple of disposable "red shirts" as usual. What is "red shirt" Compton doing just before he disappears?

Answer: Tasting the water from a fountain

As the landing party is scanning the area for the Scalosians who sent the distress call, "Brainiac" Compton takes a drink of water from a fountain. Maybe the transportation process left a dry taste in his mouth or Compton is just plain stupid. Either way, there must be some away party protocols that say no eating or drinking the local food or water, right? McCoy happens to glance over at Compton just in time to see him vanish and Kirk orders the landing party back to the Enterprise.
4. After returning from Scalos, Kirk and Spock discover an alien device has been attached to what area of the ship?

Answer: Environment Engineering

Shortly after beaming back to the Enterprise, strange things start to happen. Various malfunctions occur in the ship's systems that seem to immediately correct themselves. Nurse Chapel notices medical supplies have been moved around and an alien device appears in Environmental Engineering, aka Life Support.

A force field prevents the crew from entering the area but Kirk and Spock are still allowed to get close to the device. They can look at it, but they cannot touch it.
5. What does Captain Kirk do just before Lt. Uhura sees him disappear?

Answer: Takes a drink of coffee

Spock uses the ship's computer to confirm the Enterprise has been invaded by an unidentified enemy. With an alien device attached to life support systems and an unseen enemy wreaking havoc on the ship's systems, what's the first thing a crack starship captain would do? Take a coffee break, or course! A random Yeoman serves a round of coffee to the bridge crew in the middle of this crisis. Just before Kirk takes a sip of his coffee, someone or something slips a "mickey" into his cup.

After setting his cup back down in the nifty cup holder in the arm of his command chair, Kirk vanishes right before Uhura's eyes.
6. Deela, Queen of the Scalosians, introduces herself to Captain Kirk as "the enemy". Why is he not successful at shooting her with his phaser?

Answer: She steps out of the way of the phaser beam

After drinking his coffee, Kirk notices the remaining bridge crew begins to move rather slowly and then stops moving altogether. A beautiful woman appears on the bridge, plants a big smooch on him and introduces herself as "the enemy". She is Deela, one of the Scalosians seen in the distress call message.

He pulls out his phaser and takes a shot to stun her, but the weapon's energy beam moves so slowly that she is able to simple step aside to avoid having it hit her.
7. Why can't the Enterprise crew see the Scalosians?

Answer: The Scalosians exist in a hyper-accelerated state.

Deela assures the Captain there is nothing wrong with the crew. It is Kirk who is different now. The Scalosians are a race of people who exist in a hyper-accelerated state. They move so fast that normal people cannot see them. They move "in the wink of an eye". Get it? Deela has accelerated Captain Kirk to their level by adding a little Scalosian water to his coffee.

She tells Kirk that after a while he will come to accept his new accelerated life.
8. What is the purpose of the alien device the Scalosians have installed on the Enterprise?

Answer: To place the crew in a deep freeze.

Kirk rushes down to Environmental Engineering where he encounters Compton, who has accepted his new life and is helping the Scalosians. The Scalosians explain how their civilization was mostly wiped out due to volcanic activity on Scalos which released radioactivity into their water supply.

They became accelerated from drinking the water. Most of the women died and the men became sterile. Their plan is to place the Enterprise crew into a deep freeze, thawing them out whenever they need them for mating purposes. Kirk has been chosen as Deela's mate because she finds him "pretty".
9. After disappearing, how does Captain Kirk let the crew know he is still there?

Answer: He leaves a tape recording in Dr. McCoy's medical computer.

Kirk records a tape explaining what the Scalosians are up to. Deela allows him to do this because she believes it will be too late by the time they hear it. Of course, the tape sounds like buzzing until Spock can adjust the speed to see Kirk's message. Fortunately, by this time Spock had figured out the Scalosians are accelerated. Why not just leave a hand written note in front of Spock? It would appear right under his nose as soon as Kirk finished writing it. Standing still in one spot for some time seems like it would work as well.
10. What does Captain Kirk do that buys him enough time to figure out a way to destroy the alien device before the Scalosians can activate it?

Answer: He disables the transporter.

Knowing the Scalosians cannot activate their deep freeze device before they leave the Enterprise, Kirk hurries over to the transporter room and pulls a chip from the console, rendering the transporter inoperable. While the Scalosians work on repairing the transporter, Kirk uses the extra time to have sex with Deela, steal her weapon and make his way to the alien device.

He meets up with Spock, who has accelerated himself to bring Kirk a counter-agent developed by McCoy, and they destroy the device. Defeated, the Scalosians are sent packing as Kirk fondly remembers the great sex he had with Deela. Is there a baby Kirk in Deela's future?
