"Morrowind" Skills Trivia Quiz

When Bethesda Softworks started work on "Morrowind", they set out to make the best single-player RPG they could. "Morrowind" is complex, intriguing, and overall the most fun I've ever had gaming. Here's a quiz about the skills in "Morrowind".

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is a skill in "Morrowind"?

Answer: Athletics

Endurance is a player attribute which governs more than one skill. Fatigue is a measure of the amount of exertion your PC can handle. The concept of dexterity is split between several aspects of "Morrowind", and appears nowhere as a discrete entity. Athletics is the skill which modifies the speed at which your PC moves, and how quickly it loses fatigue.
2. Which of these is not a catagory of skill?

Answer: Diplomacy

The 27 skills in "Morrowind" are divided into three catagories. - Combat, Magic, and Stealth. When you make a character, you choose one of these catagories to specialize in. All of the skills in your chosen catagory gain a small bonus. Skills relating to diplomacy are included in the stealth catagory.
3. Which of these skills is governed by the Speed attribute?

Answer: Short Blade

Each skill in "Morrowind" is governed by one of 7 attributes. This has several effects. For example, you cannot train a skill past its governing attribute. Governing attributes also play an important role when you level-up. (FYI: Short blade = Speed, Sneak = Agility, Acrobatics = Strength, Illusion = Personality)
4. How many skill levels do your major or minor skills have to advance before you level-up?

Answer: 10

To level-up in "Morrowind", your major or minor skills must advance at least 10 points. When it comes time to level up, you select three attributes to increase. Those attributes in which you advanced a skill that level gain multipliers, so that those attributes can increase faster. Multipliers range from 2x to 5x, with the multiplier reflecting how much those skills advanced.
5. How many times can you fail at picking a lock before your Security skill advances?

Answer: Infinite

Skills are only advanced through their successful use. You can swing at and miss a rat as long as you want, but only hitting the rat will advance your skills. With this in mind, it is often a good idea to get training for those skills in which you are very poor - it will help you advance faster on your own.
6. Armor skills will advance naturally in God mode.

Answer: false

As is stated above, skills only advance with their successful use. As such, armor skills (Light, Medium, and Heavy Armor and Unarmored) do not advance in God mode because your character must get hit to advance them. Block, the shield-using skill, will advance as long as you have a shield equipped.
7. How many skills are there in "Morrowind"?

Answer: 27

The 27 skills in "Morrowind" in their catagories are - (Combat) - Armorer, Athletics, Heavy Armor, Medium Armor, Long Blade, Blunt Weapon, Spear, Axe, Block; (Magic) - Illusion, Alteration, Mysticism, Restoration, Destruction, Conjuration, Alchemy, Enchant, Unarmored; (Stealth) - Short Blade, Light Armor, Speechcraft, Security, Mercantile, Hand-to-Hand, Sneak, Acrobatics, Marksman.

Some mods to the game add skills, but those 27 are the only ones included in the original game. The eight attributes are Strength, Willpower, Endurance, Agility, Intelligence, Speed, Personality, and Luck. Luck governs no attributes directly, but has a small effect on everything you do.
8. Which of these is a skill requirement for the Blades?

Answer: Long Blade

Skills also control your advancement within the various factions in the game. In order to gain promotions, in addition to performing tasks for a faction, you have to meet that faction's skill requirements. Each faction will have 4-6 favored skills, and your character must have a minimum prowess in these to move up the faction ladder.
9. Successful use and training are the only ways to advance skills.

Answer: False

There are three ways a skill can advance. First, through successful use. Second, through training. Third, through certain books scattered over the game world. Reading one of these books advances a skill by one point. Books with numbers in their titles are often skill-advancing.
10. If you begin the game as a Redguard with a combat specialization and with Long Blade as a major skill, what will its level begin as?

Answer: 50

Major skills start at 30, are essential to your character, and increase the fastest. Minor skills are important to your character, and increase normally. Miscellaneous skills are tangential to your character, and increase slowest. The race you choose increases certain skills and attributes related to that race, as well as giving you special abilities. Long Blade as a Major Skill = 30 + 15 for being a Redguard + 5 for combat specialization = 50 beginning skill points.

This is a good combination for early weapon prowess, and can only be matched by the Marksman skill of a Wood Elf with a stealth specialization.
