Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Throughout the course of "Doom"/"Doom 2"/"Final Doom", the player will find and use a large arsenal of weapons. Just how many weapons can the player find throughout the series? NOTE: Power-ups, the chainsaw and the fists are not considered weapons for the sake of this question.

Answer: Seven

There are a total of 7 weapons to be found in the original Doom games: pistol, shotgun, double-barreled shotgun, chaingun, rocket launcher, plasma rifle, and BFG 9000.

In addition, the player can also use his fists to punch enemies and even inflict serious damage with them if he has picked up the berserk power-up. However, the fists are technically not "weapons". Hence why the correct answer is 7 and not 8 even though the fists technically use the Nr.1 weapon slot in the player's weapon inventory. In addition, while the chainsaw can be very effective against enemies it also technically isn't a "weapon".
2. One of the key reasons for the success of "Doom" during the early '90s was the popularity of the "Shareware" version of "Doom" which gave the player the whole first episode of the game for free. However, not all of the weapons were included in the Shareware. Which of the following weapons were missing in the Shareware?

Answer: The plasma rifle and BFG 9000

The Plasma Rifle and the BFG 9000 were omitted from the Shareware version of "Doom". However, it should be noted that this wasn't only because the developers wanted to limit the number of features in this free version of "Doom" but also because the more tougher and more difficult monsters did not actually make appearances until "Doom"'s later episodes, thus defeating the point of including the more powerful guns in the first episode in the first place.
3. Almost all of the weapons in the "Doom" series use ammo that also work with other weapons. However, there is one weapon that uses its own special type of ammo and will not work with any other type of ammo but its own. Which weapon is that?

Answer: Rocket launcher

The rocket launcher is the only weapon that requires rockets. All of the other weapons can share their ammo supply with other weapons. The pistol and the chaingun both use bullets, the shotgun and the double-barreled shotgun both use shells, and the plasma rifle and the BFG both use energy cells.

Technically, there was no other weapon other than the shotgun that could share its ammo with other weapons before the release of "Doom 2" since the first "Doom" did not have the double-barreled shotgun.
4. Throughout "Doom"'s first episode ("Knee-deep in the Dead") you can only find and use four of the game's weapons, since the rest aren't found until in later episodes. What is the most powerful weapon the player can find and use in the episode to inflict area damage?

Answer: Rocket launcher

The rocket launcher is the most powerful because its the only weapon that can inflict area damage. The chaingun is the second most powerful weapon in the episode.
5. The player will find lots and lots of ammo through the course of the games, and he will need all of it. The developers of the games were very well aware of this, so they decided to add a power-up into the games that doubled the maximum amount of ammo that the player could store on him at any given time. What is this power-up called?

Answer: A backpack

Once the player picks up a backpack, a message appears that says, "You just picked up a backpack full of ammo!".

Picking up a backpack can dramatically change the player's chances of making it through a tough level if there is enough ammo to be found and stored.
6. The Spider Mastermind is the final boss enemy (though it is sometimes found in "Doom 2" and "Final Doom" as well) of "Doom"'s third episode, "Inferno". It is a giant spider like enemy that is armed with a super version of one of the player's own weapons. Which weapon is it?

Answer: The chaingun

The Spider Mastermind is armed with a super chaingun that is both more devastating then the player's own chaingun and is also far more accurate. The player would do well to stay behind cover when confronted with this enemy.
7. Some of the zombie enemies in the games are armed with the same weapons as the player and will drop them when killed. Which weapons do these zombies use?

Answer: The shotgun and the chaingun

Sergeants are armed with shotguns and chaingunners are armed with chainguns. Both will drop their weapons for the player to pick up when they are killed. The regular zombies merely drop bullets.
8. One of the key characteristics of "Doom"'s gameplay is the fast-paced action. This fast pace can be largely contributed to what fact?

Answer: Weapons can fire forever while there is ammo for them and don't have to be reloaded

Unlike most modern shooters where the player typically has to get behind cover and reload his gun, in "Doom" the player can simply fire his weapons endlessly so long as he has ammo for them. There is no real reason to actually stop shooting provided that there is still something on the screen to shoot at, and the large number of enemies that the player would typically encounter made sure that this was rarely the case!
9. "Doom" has many different weapons and tools the player can use to inflict pain and misery to the demon horde, but only one weapon is powerful enough to level a small town. Which weapon is the most powerful in all of "Doom"/"Doom 2"/"Final Doom"?

Answer: The BFG 9000

The BFG 9000 is the undisputed king in "Doom"'s weapon arsenal. It is the only weapon in the game that is powerful enough to insta-kill every single monster the player faces (not counting boss monsters like the Cyber Demon and the Spider Mastermind and even then, they can still be killed with just a handful of blasts).

Its only drawback is the large amounts of ammo it consumes and how slowly its energy projectiles travel before hitting their targets.
10. During the development of the original "Doom", the alpha version of the game had a weapon that never made it into the final version. Which weapon was that?

Answer: A rifle with a bayonet

The "Doom" alpha had a bayonet that never actually saw the light of day. There are, however, some community mods that re-add the weapon into the game.
