Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Level one of 'Doom I' is a map that takes a "get to know the game and ease you in gently" approach. With what weapon do you start the first level of this PS1 game, 'Hangar'?

Answer: Pistol

As with most games you start off on a very easy level that doesn't contain monsters in abundance, with the simplest weapon available. The pistol isn't very efficient but until you run across a shotgun, the next weapon available, you have to make do with it or if you want you can use your fists!
2. In 'Hangar', level one of 'Doom I', the first weapon of any real significance that you pick up is dropped by a sergeant. This zombie is a stronger version of the zombieman or former human. What weapon does the sergeant drop upon death?

Answer: Shotgun

The shotgun is one of the best guns to use, not just in the opening levels of 'Doom I' but throughout the game. Initially you have a maximum capacity of fifty shells for your shotgun but when you pick up a backpack, which are pretty easy to find, your maximum capacity jumps to one hundred shells for the shotgun. Picking up a backpack will also increase your maximum ammunition capacity for all other guns in your arsenal.
3. 'Doom I' has a variety of difficulty modes ranging from I'm a wimp to ultra violence. The standard difficulty is hurt me plenty and on that mode the first level of the game, 'Hangar', is very straightforward. However, which of these monsters makes an appearance in 'Hangar' when playing in the ultra violence mode?

Answer: Pain Elemental

Pain elementals really are a fuss about nothing. Yes, they look scary and make strange noises but in real terms they aren't so bad. Their mode of attack is to fire another monster, the lost soul, from its mouth. These are a bit of a nuisance as they often get in the way and attack you in groups.

As the lost souls are often in your face they prevent you from using a rocket launcher, the only weapon in your arsenal that can hurt you as well as your enemy.
4. If a video game player decides to play the first level of 'Doom I', 'Hangar', in ultra violence mode, monsters are present that don't appear in the standard mode of difficulty. One such monster is the heavy weapon dude but upon its death does this enemy drop a weapon?

Answer: Yes

The amusingly named heavy weapon dude drops a chain gun upon its death. This particular enemy usually isn't met until a few levels into 'Doom II' in standard modes of difficulty. The chain gun is a very handy weapon to have in the early stages of 'Doom I' in the harder modes of difficulty.

In the ultra violence mode it is possible to obtain a shotgun and a chain gun in addition to your starting pistol by the end of the first level.
5. At the end of 'Hangar', level one of 'Doom I', you open the instantly recognizable exit door so that you can flick the switch to allow you to enter level two, 'Plant'. What monster is occupying the exit room of 'Hangar'?

Answer: Imp

Imps are humanoid monsters on 'Doom I' and when I was young I always used to call them 'gorillas'! I have no idea why because imps look nothing at all like a gorilla. The imp will throw balls of fire from long or short distances and this can substantially reduce your health, particularly if there is a group of the monsters. Killing an imp with a pistol is of easy-to-moderate difficulty but with a shotgun these humanoids can be disposed of in a matter of one or two shells!
6. 'Plant' is the name of the second level of 'Doom I' and it is during this level we see the first of the coloured keys. What is the colour of the key found in this map?

Answer: Red

In the fantastic game of 'Doom' there are some doors, usually coloured grey, that you can open at any time and there are others, either red, blue or yellow, that require a specific key to gain entry. As the levels of this video game progress and get harder it becomes more difficult to acquire the keys and in many situations you are bombarded with a plethora of monsters upon daring to pick the key up.
7. The second level of 'Doom I' called 'Plant' houses the first examples of a particular monster. What is this monster called?

Answer: Demon

These ostensibly gelatinous creatures will growl at you but as long as you keep attacking the demon it will do little harm. They only really become dangerous when they are in packs and you are short on ammunition. There are a variety of demons found on 'Doom I' including one that is almost invisible.

These translucent demons are a nightmare to find when you are in a room that is completely dark for long periods.
8. Level three of 'Doom I' which is called 'Toxin Refinery' is the first map of the game where you can pick up a certain weapon. Which weapon is this that occupies space number six in your arsenal?

Answer: Rocket launcher

The rocket launcher is a very handy addition to your weapon collection particularly if you enjoy blasting the monsters of 'Doom I' from afar. The gun is less than useless at close range as the chances are it will kill you as well as your enemy depending on the state of your health.

The plasma gun is one of my favourites but the ammunition tends to run out rather quickly but the gun is useful over short and long ranges. The super shotgun despite its name is, in my opinion, an inferior version of the shotgun. The BFG9000 isn't a very practical weapon but can have its uses such as being handy when attacking a cyberdemon. Any guesses as to what BFG stands for? ;)
9. In 'Toxin Refinery', a level of 'Doom I', you can pick up an item that will supercharge your health. What is the alternate name of this instantly recognisable blue item that will add 100% to your total health up to a maximum of 200%?

Answer: Soul sphere

If you are in a bad state regarding your health percentage then stumbling across the soul sphere is a delightful and relieving experience! On maps that have a longer par time or that are particularly difficult there can often be multiple soul spheres dotted around.

The far more common health potion is also blue but is shaped like a vial and adds 2% to your total health percentage. The berserk pack will take your health up to a maximum of 100% whilst the rare megasphere will always take you to the maximum 200% even if you are on 1% at the time of discovery!
10. At the end of the third level of 'Doom I' called 'Toxin Refinery' you go through the usual procedure of walking through the iconic black door and clicking the switch. How many exit rooms are there on this particular level of 'Doom I'?

Answer: Two

'Toxin Refinery' has two possible exits with one of those leading to a succeeding 'secret' map called 'Military Base'. The traditional continuation from 'Toxin Refinery' is the rather boring level 'Command Control'. I always opt to play 'Military Base' as it has a better geography to it and it also bombards you with monsters, great!
