Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Audio, audire, audivi, auditus: identify the infinitive out of these four principal parts.

Answer: audire

When conjugating in present, imperfect, or future tenses, the infinitive is the stem you use. The infinitive is usually translated as "to": for example, "audire" means "to hear."
2. The correct present tense, active voice conjugation for "laudo, laudare" is "laudo, laudes, laudet, laudemus, laudetis, laudent."

Answer: False

I have one Latin book that teaches you to conjugate first, but I think it's better to see some samples of the language and gain some basic vocabulary before you get into grammar. That's what "Ecce Romani" does. The correct conjugation in the present indicative active is: laudo, laudas, laudat, laudamus, laudatis, laudant.
3. Which of the following is an accusative singular form?

Answer: puellam

The accusative is the object of the sentence, the thing that receives the action of the verb.
4. Does the preposition "cum" take the ablative or the accusative?

Answer: ablative

Most prepositions take just the ablative or accusative, but "in" can take either, depending on the context.
5. What is the correct form of the adjective "bonus, a, um," such that it agrees with the 3rd declension noun "patrem"?

Answer: bonum

If a noun is 3rd declension, you can't make a 1st/2nd declension adjective have the same endings. The noun and adjective just have to agree in person and number.
6. What is the present active idicative 2nd person sg. of "sum, esse"?

Answer: es

"Sum, esse" is an irregular verb, which means it doesn't follow the set verb rules. This can make conjugating the word very difficult -- believe me!
7. What is the correct 2nd person singular, perfect, active voice form for "traho, trahere, traxi, tractus"?

Answer: traxisti

This word can be translated as "you dragged" or "you did drag." The English word "tractor" comes from the 4th principal part, "tractus."
8. Are the English translations for "hic" and "ille" "this" and "that," respectively?

Answer: Yes

We had to memorize all the forms of "hic" and "ille" in eighth grade, something I found rather difficult. Thus, I will be tolerant if you missed this question.
9. Put the active voice verb "credo" in the passive voice.

Answer: credor

Passive voice is not actually in Ecce Romani's curriculum until the second year, but my teacher taught it to us at the end of the first year, so I hope you won't mind its inclusion in a supposedly first year quiz.
10. Finally, select the most accurate and literal translation of this sentence: "Aurelius canem meum in piscinam traxit."

Answer: Aurelius dragged my dog into the fishpond

From Seneca to the Bayeux Tapestry, there are so many fantastic things written in Latin! If you have a reading knowledge of it, you can enjoy such wonderful writing.
