Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Typically made of cast iron, what part holds the cylinders and many other components inside a lubricated housing?

Answer: Cylinder Block

The cylinder block is the main part of an engine. It is where the engine is mounted to the chassis and also where the power is made to propel the automobile.
2. What part is connected to a crankshaft by connecting rods that sends power to a transmission as the fuel ignites in the combustion chamber?

Answer: Piston

The piston fits into the cylinder walls and receives the force that is made when the gas and spark is made in the combustion chamber. As the piston is forced down, the crankshaft spins the flywheel causing the transmission to rotate.
3. What part is connected to the crankshaft by the timing chain and opens and closes the intake and exhaust valves with lobes as the engine spins?

Answer: Camshaft

The camshaft basic function is to open the intake and exhaust valves. There are four basic strokes in most combustion engines - Intake, Compression, Combustion, and Exhaust strokes. The Camshaft controls which valve needs to be open and at what time.
4. What part connects to the piston rods and the flywheel?

Answer: Crankshaft

The crankshaft changes the up and down motion of the pistons to the rotating motion needed to power the vehicle by a transmission. The crankshaft is twice as big as the camshaft spinning at a 2 to 1 ratio.
5. What part on an engine controls the timing of the engine's valves?

Answer: Timing Belt/chain

Keeping the valves and pistons working in order is very important in engine timing and this is maintained the timing chain/belt. It is normally connected to the camshaft and crankshaft by a chain or belt.
6. What part connects the piston to the crankshaft in an engine?

Answer: Connecting Rod

The connecting rod along with the piston and crankshaft converts linear motion to rotating motion. Most common engine failures are due to the connecting rod malfunctions.
7. This part closes the valve and keeps the lifter in contact with the camshaft?

Answer: Valve Spring

In controlling the breathing in internal combustion engines, valve springs play an important role. The valves are mechanically opened by a camshaft and the valve springs job is to close the valve.
8. In engine terms, what does DOHC mean?

Answer: Dual Over Head Cam

DOHC mean dual over head cam. This means engine has two cam shafts located above each row of cylinder heads. The dual camshafts allows for twice as many valves per cylinder.
9. What part sits on top of the valve stem and connects to the push rods to open and close the intake and exhaust valve?

Answer: Rocker Arm

As the camshaft lobe moves the rocker arm, it pushes open either an intake or exhaust valve. As the valve opens, it allows fuel and air mixture to go into the combustion chamber and the exhaust to exit the engine.
10. What part is the starting point for combustion in an engine?

Answer: Spark Plug

The spark plug is important in the firing of an engine. As the combustion chamber fills with air and fuel, the spark plug deliver the fire source to ignite the mixture. The spark plug get its spark from the distributor through a set of wires.
