Didn't realize I had said nothing about ABBA. I think my mother had one of their records. Not voting for them this year. Reply #1. Sep 23 09, 9:23 PM |

I think it will be Donna Summer, Genesis, Abba, The Hollies, and KISS. If Genesis doesn't make it, The Chantels. Reply #2. Sep 23 09, 9:43 PM |

I have always been disappointed that progressive rock music is underrepresented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame so while I am glad to see Genesis nominated, in my opinion, Yes or The Moody Blues are more deserving of this nomination and I don't know why they continue to be excluded. The first thing they should do is change the name to "The music that we voters like Hall of Fame" as "Rock and Roll" music no longer seems to be relevent in the induction process anymore. ABBA? Sheesh, and I thought Madonna was bad.Amazing to me that the rock group that was the 1st to sell one million copies of a CD isn't even worth considering. A shame-they were a very good group and better than anyone nominated the last 3 years-Dire Straits Reply #5. Sep 24 09, 8:11 AM |

I agree with you 100% bluerodeo. There is definitely something wrong with their nomination process and I don't know how the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame expects to be taken seriously. Reply #6. Sep 24 09, 10:01 AM |

Laura Nyro was a brilliant songwriter, and wrote a lot of well-known songs for other people. She recorded as well, but there were better singers. Her singing ability was comparable to Joni Mitchell's. Reply #7. Sep 24 09, 10:32 AM |

Have to respectfully disagree with those who think ABBA shouldn't be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Since its inception, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has not only inducted artists who are classically Rock and Roll artists, but also some who have merit that most would have difficulty calling their music Rock and Roll (Hank Williams, B.B. King, Bob Marley, John Lee Hooker, Run DMC come to mind). Those who choose the nominess are looking for some combination of merit, critical acclaim, and influence on others. A strong argument could me made that ABBA were the best pure pop band in the world ever. Benny and Bjorn knew how to write song hooks better than almost anyone in the game, even the BeeGees, who are already in the Rock Hall. Artists like Rock Hall member Elvis Costello have admitted to stealing ABBA riffs to compose songs and there have been several ABBA tribute projects, including a very nicely done EP by Erasure. That they have been influential on other artists who have followed them has been undeniable. One can see their influence in many of the pop bands that subsequently followed them, including Blondie and Duran Duran, both of whose production owes much to the ABBA sound. ABBA have certainly been guilty of putting out records that I've considered clunkers- a few of their album tracks are groanworthy ("Two for the Price of One" comes to mind). At the top of their game, their mixture of superb hooks and the underlying sadness of many ABBA lyrics, juxtaposed with the sweetness of their sound ("The Winner Takes It All", "The Name of the Game", "Like An Angel Passing Through My Room") gives them a unique sound. IMHO, ABBA is one of the great omissions in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I would also include New Order, Alice Cooper, Kraftwerk, Randy Newman, and Roxy Music in that same group. So, of these nominees, my picks would be: ABBA the Stooges Donna Summer the Hollies Jimmy Cliff Reply #11. Sep 24 09, 7:12 PM |

Yes,thanks for that strnog1! Given the parameters for induction,I find it amazing that ABBA and Jimmy Cliff were not elected twenty years ago - IMHO! Reply #13. Sep 27 09, 11:00 AM |

"I find it amazing that ABBA and Jimmy Cliff were not elected twenty years ago - IMHO!" You have to wait 25 years after your first album to be eligible. That's why they were not inducted 20 years ago. Reply #14. Sep 27 09, 11:53 AM |

Thanks Anton - didn't know that,either! So,Jimmy Cliff,O.M.,has only been eligible for 16 YEARS! And ABBA (like them or not,hugely influential),a mere 11 YEARS. Reply #15. Sep 27 09, 12:11 PM |

A strong argument could me made that ABBA were the best pure pop band in the world ever. Fine-then let's change the name to "The Pop Hall of Fame". Let's leave Rock and Roll to rockers, and rock influencers shall we? Having ABBA in the Rock Hall of Fame is like having Willie Mays in the Cricket Hall of Fame. ps-George Thorogood-serious omission Reply #16. Sep 27 09, 12:20 PM |

RV, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. It took years for Black Sabbath to get inducted and Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Deep Purple are not even in it. Maybe they have a bias against metal, but there is no denying those bands I mentioned belong in there. Reply #17. Sep 27 09, 12:34 PM |

Agreed, again,Anton. I think the problem lies in the title. Having just had a quick look at the inductees,I would suggest at least 50% don't really qualify as Rock 'N' Rollers. Besides,it took them 4 YEARS to include the greatest Band of all time - The Rolling Stones! SHEESH! How can it be serious? Perhaps it should be re-named The Popular (or Influential) Music Hall of Fame? Reply #18. Sep 27 09, 12:46 PM |
