Subject: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The nominees for the 2010 R&R HOF class were announced earlier. They are (in no particular order):

KISS
ABBA
Donna Summer
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Genesis
the Stooges
LL Cool J
Jimmy Cliff
the Hollies
Darlene Love
the Chantels
Laura Nyro

The induction ceremony will take place March 15 in New York City, only five of the 12 will be inducted (announced in December). Tough task, but interested in hearing your five nominees.....

I'm going w/ KISS (overdue, like it or not), Genesis, LL, the Stooges, and even though I abhor disco, Donna Summer. Hard to exclude the Hollies and Jimmy Cliff though. Not too familiar w/ Laura Nyro, the Chantels, or Darlene Love. Thoughts?

Their first album was in 1990, so it is borderline if the requirement is still 25 years.

Strnog, The Offspring is a California band too, but they will probably never get in. It is going to end up being another Deep Purple. They deserve it if Green Day does. Their body of work can match anything Green Day has done, and if we go biggest album vs biggest album (aka the albums that put them both on the map) Smash is a much better album than Dookie.

Let's face it, this never really was a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There have always been blues players as "influencers" of rock. But while Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Run-D.M.C. may all be popular and talented, I wouldn't qualify them as rock or influencers.

As far as Green Day goes, the class that was announced was the class that will be inducted in 2015 so a 1990 release would be 25 years.

Well if you want to Influencers then where is Deep Purple? They and Black Sabbath are the Godfathers of Heavy Metal.

Spiderghost, have you had a chance to see or hear Ritchie Blackmore's current band, Blackmore's Night? Definitely a different style than Deep Purple but some awesome Ritchie.

The Hollies were inducted in 2010.

On a worrying note, where is Deep Purple? They only created the most recognizable riff ever.

It's good that The Hollies are in, they made some great music in the 60's and 70's. Deep Purple should be in, as well. You're right, matthew, "Smoke on the Water" alone should put them in the Hall!

So, the long list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees were released today (from whom actual inductees will be chosen in a couple of months or so)

The Cars
Cheap Trick
Chic
Chicago
Deep Purple
Janet Jackson
the JB's (James Brown's back up band)
Chaka Khan
Los Lobos
Steve Miller Band
Nine Inch Nails
NWA
The Smiths
The Spinners
Yes

As happy as I am to see Deep Purple and Yes (both of whom I think will actually be inducted this year), I was somewhat bored by the choices, which didn't have much in the way of surprises other than Los Lobos and the JB's. Was hoping for Kraftwerk, Harry Nilsson, or Roxy Music and somewhat surprised not to find the Moody Blues on the ballot. A fairly small percentage of British artists when there are quite a few out there that are very deserving.

I'll post later my personal picks from this list and my guesses as to who will actually make the short list.

Once again I'm disappointed to see The Moody Blues being ignored. I'm happy to see most of these names and am scratching my head at the inclusion of a couple of others, but then why should this year be any different?

Yet again, the Hall ignores some of the most worthiest names of all, but oh well, I have up caring long ago. Of those, I'd choose Chic, NWA, Deep Purple, The Smiths and Nine Inch Nails, though Yes thoroughly deserve it also.

I'd really like to see Chicago and Cheap Trick make it in. ESPECIALLY Chicago, I can't believe they're not in yet.

I can't believe Three Dog Night isn't in yet. I'm not sure if they've even been nominated. They were huge from the late 60's to the mid 70's. They've very rarely gotten the respect they deserve. The Moody Blues should also be in. Well, I could go on and on. I'll stop now.

Define merit. Which act are you trying to define Upstart3?
