I agree that if there is a hall of fame that means anything then Deep Purple should have been in for ages. Reply #161. Oct 23 15, 3:18 PM |

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame released the short list of inductees today. They are: Cheap Trick Chicago Deep Purple NWA the Steve Miller Band Four of my six picks for who I would have placed in (out of the long list) and a little bit different from who I though they would pick. Finally Deep Purple is in, ending the most glaring omission in the Rock Hall. That leaves the Moody Blues and Kraftwerk as the artists that I can't believe aren't in the hall yet. Reply #162. Why is NWA there? Rock and Roll Hall of Fame not the Rap HOF Reply #163. Dec 17 15, 1:58 PM |

Too bad we can't have everything we want, but I'm happy to see these groups chosen (except NWA). Reply #164. Dec 18 15, 12:55 AM |

Well, it's that time of the year again, when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominating committee releases its long list of nominees from which roughly 7 will be named for induction in about March of next year. The list this year is very long and includes: Bad Brains The Cars Chaka Khan Chic Depeche Mode Electric Light Orchestra Jane's Addiction Janet Jackson J. Geils Band Joan Baez Joe Tex Journey Kraftwerk MC5 Pearl Jam Steppenwolf Tupac Shakur Yes the Zombies A long list and a little bit of something for everyone, I guess. Again, a very American-centric list as usual, with 14 of the 19 being American, 4 Brits and one German. Notable omissions: (IMHO) the Moody Blues Roxy Music the Monkees Pat Benatar Duran Duran Eurythmics Kate Bush Who I would pick, in order of my enthusiasm for their nomination: Kraftwerk Electric Light Orchestra The Cars Yes the Zombies Joan Baez Who I think they'll induct: Pearl Jam Tupac Shakur Janet Jackson Electric Light Orchestra The Cars Yes What is disappointing about the length of the list is that it is obvious when you look at this long list that the Rock Hall nominating committee doesn't really have any interest in inducting many, like the Moody Blues or the Monkees (the latter who I would argue are progenitors of music video) who couldn't even garner enough votes to make a list of 19. Eleven of the 19 have been nominated previously, including Chic (who have their 11th nomination now without making it in) and two of the list are probably shoo-ins, Pearl Jam and Tupac Shakur, both in their first year of eligibility. An error in my previous post: ten of the nineteen had been nominated previously. For some reason I thought Depeche Mode had been nominated before. Reply #166. Oct 18 16, 11:29 AM |

One day all bands that have had any success, even a wee bit of success will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Farce. Reply #167. Oct 18 16, 4:25 PM |

Still waiting for the day Brian Eno, the Cure, the Smiths, My Bloody Valentine and Joy Division are acknowledged, they're too worthy. My choices would be Kraftwerk, Joan Baez, Chic, Depeche Mode and ELO, with Janet Jackson up there too. I actually wouldn't mind too much if Tupac got in either (controversial opinion, perhaps). For some reason I doubt they'd pick Depeche mode AND Kraftwerk in one go, though. I personally find acts like Pearl Jam and Jane's Addiction overrated (not to say I don't enjoy them, though). Not too keen on Journey being nominated, in all honesty. Then again, it doesn't really bother me much who they choose. I'm very much over Hall of Fame. Reply #168. Oct 18 16, 7:55 PM |

Actual inductees announced today for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are: Electric Light Orchestra Joan Baez Journey Pearl Jam Tupac Shakur Yes with Nile Rodgers being tagged for an "Award for Musical Excellence" after 11 previous long-list nominations for Chic. I'm actually pleased by this list, although Kraftwerk not making the cut is my only major disappointment and the Cars not making it is a lesser one. Picked 4 of the 6 correctly for people who I thought they would induct. Not disappointed in seeing Janet Jackson, who there has been heavy lobbying to include, not make the short list. Yes and ELO making it in will make it easier for the Moody Blues to follow, shortly hopefully. Reply #169. Dec 20 16, 12:45 PM |

As a longtime progressive rock fan, I am glad about Yes and ELO being finally inducted. My husband and I are big fans of both bands. On the other hand, I don't really think the RRHOF has any credibility, especially after some rather dubious inductions in the past few years. Reply #171. Dec 20 16, 4:12 PM |

Here we go for another year. My choices were made pretty easy for me this year: Radiohead Nina Simone Link Wray Depeche Mode Kate Bush Dire Straits Although I’m sure they’ll pick Bon Jovi. Shame Kraftwerk weren’t noninated this year. Reply #175. Oct 04 17, 10:22 PM |

RATM are awesome too, but I think on a different level to my selections. I’d choose them in almost any other year. Reply #176. Oct 04 17, 10:25 PM |

So, it looks like the long list of nominees this year are: Kate Bush Bon Jovi The Cars Depeche Mode Dire Straits Eurythmics J.Geils Band Judas Priest LL Cool J MC5 The Meters the Moody Blues Radiohead Rage Against the Machine Rufus featuring Chaka Khan Sister Rosetta Tharpe Nina Simone Link Wray the Zombies Somewhat floored by the unexpected inclusion of my favorite artist of all time, Kate Bush, who remains largely unknown in America. One of my favorite nomination lists ever! I'll have to think about who I would vote for to make the actual cut and be inducted next year. Reply #177. Oct 04 17, 10:57 PM |

Sad to say, I think it's true. Kate has really had not much chart success in the US, with "Running Up That Hill" being her only Top 40 hit and that one not even making the Top 25. She's had no Top 20 albums in the states and her only gold record in the US was "The Sensual World". Most people who I rave about Kate to have no idea who she is but put up with my adulation with polite disinterest. Most people who know music well know her, of course, both in America and elsewhere in the world, where she's more well-known. I traveled from Alaska to London to see one of her first live shows in over 30 years two years ago. It was worth it. Reply #179. Oct 05 17, 12:13 AM |
