The record for consecutively reaching base safely is 84 and is held by Ted Williams between 01 July 1949 and 29 September 1949.

The story goes that a young catcher was not happy with the calls the umpire was making. He told told him the last ball was a strike and supposedly the umpire says "Mr. Williams will let you know when it is a strike"

On the last one, he said, 'Bill'-Bill Summers was the umpire. He said, 'Bill, don't you think that ball was a strike?' And Bill said to Joe, 'Mr. Ginsberg, Mr. Williams will let you know when it is a strike.'"
