After World War II, why did Messerschmitt switch from aircraft manufacture to automobiles?

After World War II, the German company, Messerschmitt, was not allowed to make aircraft for 10 years. So the company switched to three-wheel motorcycle scooters and automobiles. In 1968 they did return to making aircraft and after several mergers and changes, they are now a part of the super company Airbus.
