I hope my friends wouldn't be so unkind, but then I'd reach for a dustpan and brush or hosepipe. The expression refers to animal excrement, in particular horse manure, which is deposited on the roads during parades or wherever horses are ridden. Unlike dog droppings, there seems to be no obligation on riders to clean up after their animals.
The name originated in America and dates from at least the 1940s or maybe even earlier.
