There are three species of cassowary and they are regarded as rather dangerous. Although it has been almost 100 years since anyone has died of a cassowary attack. The birds are very shy and avoid people. The birds are found in North Australia, New Guinea, East Nusa Tenggara, and the Maluku Islands.
The inner (first) toe has a dagger-like claw that may be 125 mm (5 in) long. This claw is particularly fearsome, since cassowaries sometimes kick humans and other animals with their powerful legs.
