Rose Michtom, wife of Morris, created stuffed toys and it was she who came up with the first teddy bears. At the time, Theodore Roosevelt had been in the news for refusing to shoot a captive bear and in doing so garnered his "Teddy" nickname. Later, President Roosevelt gave the Michtoms permission to call the toys "Teddy Bears."
